HELP! My '98 Max is dripping alot of oil, and I don't know why...
Ok this is really annoying the hell out of me.
Currently there is alot of oil dripping from the area underneath the anti-freeze and windshield washer fluid tank, I took the car to my mechanic two days ago to check it out. The first thing he told me, was that some gasket behind the engine was the cause, he said that I should just put in some of this "sealant" stuff, he did it for me. He poured it in, and supposedly in 48 hours it should create a sealant around whereever it's leaking. I didn't really trust the sealant thing from the get-go, but my mechanic was sure that it would fix the problem, he also kept saying that repairing the actual problem of that gasket would require alot of work and that labor charges would be a b*tch. So with that said, I thought, might as well try out this stuff and hope it works. He also said that I should keep putting this sealant stuff everytime I do an oilchange. The oil is still dripping from the same area, but the funny thing is, the dipstick shows otherwise, and after removing the dipstick and reinserting it like 5-10 times, it showed the same results. But I keep seeing large puddles of oil. Anyone know what could be the cause of this? I'd like to get it fixed, but I literally have no money right now if it's gonna be a labor intensive fix :(. Should I get more of that sealant stuff and pour it into my motor? Please advise me :(. |
Are you losing engine oil or power steering fluid? Your power steering lines also run along that area by your 2 reservoirs. Just curious if your oil level is going down.

I'm pretty sure it's motor oil, as I asked the mechanic if it could be power steering oil, he said no. I'll check the power steering res. in a bit though.

There are a couple of things on the back side of the engine to check. Oil pressure sending unit and the valve gasket. But those are not really in the area you are talking about. OPS is easy to fix. The rear valve cover is a little bit more labor intense. I did mine as my 1st DIY job and it wasnt too bad, just time consuming.

Check the rear valve cover gasket.

I can simply check if its the valve cover gasket, just by running my hand along the area of the cover and feel if oil is dripping from it?
|
Also should I keep pouring in that oil leak preventing crap? I really don't trust it, but should I?
|
RUn your hand along the back of the valve cover in the corner. You will know. Dont put that oil leak preventing crap in there, it will do more harm than good.

Check the oil pressure sending unit, it's known to fail and leak oil. It's located near the oil filter, perhaps thats where your oil is coming from.
