differences between Greddy and OBX exhaust catback's ??

well im going to buy a catback system for my 98 max...im going to match it with a budget Y pipe...not sure which one to go with...is one louder than the other?...I want quiet but with a bit of a tone...ive heard great things about both so its a tuff decision .. thanks for any input

lilaclucymaxima Apr 11, 2005 07:37 AM

well the price is different... the obx i believe is louder, i havent heard one, but i own a greddy sp2 and i am happy with it. it compliments my y-pipe and sounds like a beast

mbandi Apr 11, 2005 08:09 AM

The obx has a lot of drone @ cruising speed without a silencer installed. It sounds a lot like most ricey accords and civics, but not quite as bad.

Do you have any firsthand experience with this exhaust?

I've had mine for 2 years now, and I compare it to a slightly louder Greddy Sp2. It's does NOT sound like accords and civics.

I've got both Budget Y and B (with Magnaflow resonator) pipes and stock muffler. Nice growl and yet almost stock. A straight-through muffler would be a mistake if you want stock quiet levels.

i have the obx full exhaust,my buddy has the cattman headers with the sp2 exhaust sounds almost the same to me if anything obx a bit louder same quality if you ask me.and as far as the comment on it being a riced out civic  not even close :chairshot

Hi, do you have the headers/ypipe from ebAy? I heard they dont fit perfectly nor the exhaust. Is this true?

icedout Apr 11, 2005 10:01 AM

the headers fit perfect you just need to cut your motor mounts a lil for them to fit since they are alot bigger then stock. As far as the exhaust no problems with the fitment.I bought them from obx direct not from ebay :king:

Yes, I have an OBX catback on my car. I just thought it was to loud, but that was my opinion. Others like the sound. Granted, it does sound better behind a Nissan V6 than anything does behaind a Honda 4cyl.

NAS Apr 11, 2005 10:22 AM

the price is the main difference o ya and the greddy will fit perfectly unlike the OBX which cost me another $100 to get it to fit almost perfect, I believe the OBX is known to be a louder exhaust for the max than mos, but sounds nothing like a riced out civic or 4cyl, sounds more like a 300ZX, Supra, etc just a little louder than I would like.

It seems that guys on here either like aftermarket exhausts, or they don't. Sounds like you could be an Apex'i WS fan. Also, are you automatic or manual?

And on a side note, if my car sounded anything like a honda, I'd take a one way trip to the incinerator. :wall:
:redbounce :wall:

Tyrexx Apr 11, 2005 12:21 PM

If you have the money Greddy is the way to go.

aznsap Apr 11, 2005 12:40 PM

I personally have the OBX Type-H. THe muffler with this catback is straight through, and it's just loud enough under load to set off sensitive car alarms (I know because when I drive up the parking ramp in my parking garage I'll hear the occasionally alarm go off. But I'm paired up with a Y-Pipe as well. In my opinion, I just wanted an exhaust to replace my rusted one and for $260 shipped I got what I wanted as a poor college student. To me, I can't justify another $200-300 for a GReddy when you'd like to save that money for something else.

I couldn't agree more!

thanks guys for all the great input...MAN its a tuff decision...I love the org ...I think im leaning toward greddy...are there 2 diff. greddy catbacks ? ... sp2 and something else ?

Jonny98max Apr 11, 2005 01:04 PM

i have a obx catback and overall im pretty satisfied with it.....just had to do alittle modifications to make it fit properly....way cheaper than greddy....

also it sounds really good....

egerzon Apr 11, 2005 01:23 PM

I've had both a greddy sp1 and an sp2, I loved both of them. Even though some off brands are cheaper, greddy just makes a solid exhaust that not only sounds good, but also looks and feels good. I've had no experience with other exhaust systems, but from the five or so years that I've owned my greddy, its been worth every penny. I guess its really about choice. Good luck!

If your looking for a greddy, I believe there is only the SP2 available

icedout Apr 11, 2005 04:27 PM

its a hard choice to make cause they are both good exhaust

liqidvenom Apr 11, 2005 04:35 PM

i have the obx and i love how my car sounds. if i had a y-pipe without that bees sound my car would be insane sounding

ThisMaxIsTight Apr 11, 2005 07:49 PM

liquidvenom..which Y pipe do you have that gives you the bees in the can sound???....VERY curious

86maxima96 Apr 11, 2005 07:53 PM

As far as Greddy pipes, there was the SP, but that is no longer produced and has since been replaced by the SP2.

SW20 MR2 Apr 13, 2005 05:54 PM

I have always loved Greddy exhausts. The new SP2 exhausts look and sound amazing.

maximaSE327 Apr 13, 2005 06:32 PM

i just had my SP2 put on a week ago... i wanted to do y-pipr first but the muffler and b-pipe corroded over the winter and many holes formed... anyway, so i got just the cat back w/out a y-pipe and i cant even tell i have an exhaust on my car... its just as quiet as stock... only time i get any hint of the SP2 is when im at low rpms goin up a hill...

You gotta get that y-pipe on there, then you'll know for sure!! :woot2: :mardi:

96mAx2fast Apr 14, 2005 08:43 AM

sp2

I just ordered my sp2 and will get it shortly.. i will be putting it on along w/ my b&m short shifter.. does anyone know the performance gain that will be received w/ a cold air intake and the sp2? Im very curious.. Do yo think it will sound good w/ my cold air intake sp2 combo??

hectorc Apr 14, 2005 08:54 AM

The OBX is loud....I know cause my buddy has one. The general comment on OBX mufflers is that their fitment is alil off, and also their quality. Some rust quicker than others, I've seen it with some of their other products. All I'm going to say is, if you're curious and still want to get it after other people say otherwise...GET IT! You will only learn from experience, my experience told me that most exhaust will sound deeper than stock. If an exhaust is known to be loud then get a BIGGER RESONATOR. I had a straight thru Maganflow, no resonator, and 2.5" piping form the cat to back and a y-pipe. It was LOUD, I now added a 22" resonator and it sounds deep....just the way I wanted it.

MaximaSE96 Apr 14, 2005 09:40 AM

just have a custom one made.....u get ur choice of muffler

icedout Apr 14, 2005 09:47 AM

thats why u get a SS obx cat back this way it dont rust on you

96mAx2fast Apr 14, 2005 10:27 AM

The OBX-H catback has 2 resonators on the b-pipe, with a glass-pack muffler. It's definitely not super loud, and will sound the same if not better than the magnaflow + b-pipe combo.

brownsvillemax Apr 14, 2005 12:48 PM

what about the cattman exhaust? has anyone heard a catman exhaust?

Nissan 6 May 7, 2005 10:12 PM

Does anyone have any sound clips of the obx exhaust?
