I just got a new steering wheel to replace the really ugly stock one. I was wondering if there were any forums on how to replace my old steering wheel w/ the new one. Pics would be great too. thnx

1. Disconnet the cable from the negative battery terminal, then the positive battery terminal and wait AT LEAST 10 minutes before removing the wheel

2. TUrn the steering wheel so that the front wheels are pointing straight ahead.

3. Remove the small cover from the underside of the steering wheel and unplug the airbag module connector

4. Remove the side covers and remove the Torx bolts behind them (you may need a special tool, and on some models the Torx screws are tamper-resistant) which means that they are bonded by glue of some sort and you will have to discard them and get new ones to replace them with.

5. Lift the airbag module off WITH CARE and hold it trim side facing down (there is a possiblity if you do something drastic it may deploy...and when you store it...store it somewhere safe with the trim cover side facing up)

6. Disconnect the electrical wheel retaining nut, then mark the relationship of the wheel with the steering shaft...make a little mark with a marker in the little open circle.. (if your wheels are aligned straight..it should be a little above the retaining nut mechanism you just took off)

7. Disconnect the electrical connector for the cruise control wiring harness

8. Use a steering wheel puller (or something like it *carefully with hands*) to seperate the steering wheel from the steering shaft. When removing the wheel, make sure the electrical leads for the airbag module and the cruise control system do not snag on the wheel. DO NOT TURN THE STEERING WHEEL SHAFT WHILE THE STEERING WHEEL IS REMOVED.

9.Tape the center hub on the clockspring to the outer ring so that the center hub cannot rotate. This will retain the clockspring in the centered position. ALSO, do not allow the steering shaft to rotate with the steering wheel removed.

NOW BE VERY CAREFUL AND PATIENT....follow these steps and enjoy..if you want for extra security check with someone just to make sure this is all right..but this is how i did it so there you go...

What kind of wheel are you swapping out too? I don't think I've seen this done yet, I'd like to though. Might be an interesting idea for the future.

Maxed_Out_Maxma Apr 23, 2005 07:16 PM

Im not going to have one, if thats what you mean. Hopefully while im disabling it, it wont explode in my face, although that would be funny to see.
