holy crap did you paint your rotors?

notsofun May 1, 2005 09:22 AM

Nothing wrong with painting that part of the rotor, because the brake pads dont grab there, you paint there cause that spot rusts on most rotors (unless they are plated)

zazon May 1, 2005 09:25 AM

must be some high temp paint, is it just caliper paint? just curious, ive never seen that done

vqssl2914 May 1, 2005 10:07 AM

I think red calipers on a white max would look nice.

Correct, I did paint part of my rotors and hub (I guess you can call it that). There is no problem painting the part I did, like notsofun said. The pad does not touch that part of the rotor. I had rust on that part of the rotor and thought I should protect and spruce it up a little bit.

I used hi-temp engine paint (500 degrees). Didn't say caliper paint on the bottle at all, but can be found at AutoZone right near the caliper paint.

I think red calipers would look really nice on a white car! I don't know what other color would look that good.

zazon May 1, 2005 10:35 AM

sweet, thanks for the tip, i've got a buddy thinking about doing this...

sunten1 May 1, 2005 10:38 AM

I would get red on my car...and I have a white max.

So like just about everybody else said, red is the way to go.

get whatever the hell you want, its your car so do as you please.

maximizd97 May 1, 2005 07:15 PM

I'll snap pics of mine tomorrow! I bought the car with them already painted but I really like em.

2 Da Max May 1, 2005 08:28 PM

red or black is nice

bhmax16 May 1, 2005 10:01 PM

To tell you the truth I have a white max and while red would def look good I think blue would look nice too. What I dont like about red is it seems like 9 out of every 10 cars I see (maximas or not) that have painted calipers have them painted red! I like to be a little different, so blue will be going on my max. Between the tailights being red, all my corners cleared, the white max, and the blue calipers...I'll be very...umm...patriotic!

im gonna say what i always say in threads like this
red looks hot
black and silver blend in and don't outshine your wheels (if you have them)

im actually thinking of doing white when i get my rims, i think it would tie in nicely and not be too in your face but noticable

also my dad did the calipers on his 36 ford in a chrome engine paint, then cleared them. they didnt turn out chrome at all. they came out like a glossy matte color, if that makes any sense. pretty sweet lookin. just my .02

DARHAW-MAX May 1, 2005 11:17 PM

I do have a question, however. How do you prep the calipers for painting. Obviously, we don’t just paint over all of the brake dust. Will hitting them (the calipers) with a can of brake cleaner suffice, or is there more to it than that?

Take the calipers off...take the Mounting harware off...take off all the brake pad hardware...Wire Brush and Paint Thinner...Clean then all off, then paint. youll be amazed how dirty they still are once your done cleaning

I didnt even use caliper paint...Just go and get any color you want and it works...

you dont really have to take the calipers off. we did my friends SHO a few years ago and the whoel thing cost $10 max. he bought some red high temp engine paint, and used the news paper. we cleaned them with a wire brush and ID Red. no problems. there were some paint spots on the rotors, but just take the ID Red and wipe them off. good as new and took about 1.5 hrs we were in no hurry

Thats kinda the ghetto way to do it...You winde up painting the brake hardware kit and the pads..the entire caliper and everything becomes the color...Not really the clean way to do it...But to each his own...

Black Maxima May 2, 2005 01:38 PM

I didn't remove my calipers and tapeing them off would of been impossible. First, I used a wire brush to take off all the loose brake dust and rust. I used a plastic cup to spray the red paint in it. Then, with a small paint brush I painted the calipers. Took me about 3 hours to do each caliper, but was worth it! They came out great. I had so many people at my school compliment on them.

Got any pics?
RussianMax: I say go for black or silver, red is so typical, I think it's overdone. But that's just me.

Silver or Black will dissapear inside of the wheel... Silver will blend with rotor and wheel, Black will dissapear
I didnt do red cause its over played like you said...plus I didnt want "flashy"

Im considering removing my paint and going with a true steel color.
I purchased some engine enamel a while back to paint some exhaust parts and it looked really good.

Thanks. I think when I do my SE, I will take the extra time and remove everything. That way, it will have an OE look as opposed to the "backyard" look.

Black Maxima May 3, 2005 03:30 PM

They would be black in a day or two.
AHHHH Yes, never thought of that.
