HELP: Can't get EGR tube off
 

I got the two bolts that secure the tube to the plenum off, but I cannot get one the nuts that secure the tube to the EGR off... I've tried soaking it wtih PB Blaster and using a pipe over the wrench to get more leverage. There is no room to put a socket on that nut... anyone have any suggestions? :eek:

Box wrench is what I used, IIRC.

I have a 12mm wrench thats box at one end and open-ended at the other. There isn't even enough room in between the hard pipe and the threads to get a box wrench in there... I tried that too... damn... maybe I should just muscle that box wrench in there... oh, and now to make things worse, I just dropped the other nut somewhere in the engine bay - I was just going to put the other side back on.... any idea what rating nut I'm looking for.. I know its 12mm but what about the rest (hardness, etc.)...

Nope - I needed to replace some tube seals (under the valve cover) - since I had some oil seepage into my spark plug chambers. While I had everything out, I figured I would just clean out the EGR system (since I got the 0302 code a few weeks ago). I was going to go try the box end of that wrench again in a few mins - its raining right now... I need to go buy a replacement nut since I looked for an hour and couldn't see where the other one had fallen... its not on the garage floor - so I know its stuck in the bay somewhere... do I need to worry about that nut sitting in the bay?

My rule of thumb has been, if it didn't fall into the engine, it'll find it's way out of car eventually.

I cleaned my egr guide tupe not too long ago. I didn't take the tube off, but I felt like as long as I cleaned the part that connectes to the intake manifold than I should get better throttle response. I cleaned out the intake manifold entirely by the way.

I got it off - I ended up going back after reading THTs suggestion and got the box end wrench on it and got the bolt undone... but the design is so poor... I have the nut off, but the thicker washer just won't fit in the small gap between the bolt and the bigger EGR tube... so I can't get the washer out and so I can't pull the tube off... I think I'll disconnect the larger tube from the back of engine and pull the whole valve off.

FYI - the only way the open end fits on the 12mm bolt is from the bottom, but the only way you can get the box end the bolt is from above... (at least thats what happened in my case).

When I removed mine, I removed the big egr tube to clean it and used sockets. All the other time I just lossened the big nut and turned it down and then used closed end wreches to get out the egr guide tube.

Thanks Kevlo - I'll pick up the parts i need tomorrow to loosen the big tube.. that should give me the space I need to pull the EGR guide tube. Have you ever pulled the EGR valve to clean that too? I'm wondering if I should do that too...

Also - what is holding the EGR-BPT valve in place? Is it the two philips head screws on top...?

I never clean the EGR vavle. For the BPT, take screws and slide out.

Thanks - I was going to move the BPT out of the way when I was having trouble getting the guide pipe nut to break free - but wasn't sure if those screws were doing anything other than holding the valve on - since they have rubber washers on both sides...

I just gotta get that tube out so I can get the carbon chunks out - I broke some of the buildup free but the pieces fell back into the guide tube towards the valve.

Kevlo - you mentioned that you pulled the big tube to clean it - was that really dirty? or was most of the build up in the guide tube? (The guide tube is what runs from behind the valve to the plenum under the IACV - just making sure I don't have things flipped).

How did you slide out? there is a nut at the bottom that holds a metal bent tube going into BPT valve. Nut is very hard to reach with a regular 12mm open ended wrench. Wrench needed an improvised extension. After a great struggle got the nut out. But the valve still does not come off. Some thing is still holding it. What is it? Can you please give step by step removal of BPT valve? thanks a lot
