VLSD Tranny - Driver's axle leaking.
 

I jsut installed a bench tested and warrantied VLSD tranny.

I used the axle that came with it from the junkyard....so I know it fits.

It's leaking on the driver's side.

I notice that there is a brass "cup" ring around the axle facing towards the seal on the transmission and there is about 1/8" space between this "cup" and the transmission.

Is this normal or is there supposed to be no space between the seal and that "cup"? Is the axle in all the way?

The tranny like I said was bench tested and makes 0 noise and feels great except for this leak.

If anyoen has access to the spot the tranny meets the axle on a VLSD that woudl be super sweet.

That brass cup is just a dust cover / protector thing. You should make sure it's all the way in. You put in new seals correct?

i noticed this as well. it appears as though the axle doesnt sit in the tranny "cupping". it looks like its about a 1/4in. out.

i have never had mine leak and it runs fine, but i do have the ever so slight gap.

like jeff said did you change the seals? if not, they are cheap and easy to change and could very well be your culprit.

just to make sure you have the right axle...compare it to the OD one you pulled out and you will see the side where it inputs into the tranny...

the LSD axle will have 2 different sets of splines/teeth on that input shaft while the OD one will only have 1.

+3 on changing the seal if you havnt thats happpened to me

also you really have to slam the drivers axle in to get it seated all the way since the c clip dont cooporate very well somtimes

New seals = yes

Axle = same OD and was in the tranny before it was shipped - verified by phone with junkyard - it's the only Maxima they had so it had to be right as they pulled it from the car after I called then bench tested it by running it on a bench dyno for 3 hours.

So there should be a space there then? - now I'm really confused.....

new seals + space supposed to be there means it shouldn't be leaking.

I'll be taking it apart when I get home in about an hour and we'll see I guess - although now I'm not sure what to look for.

A few whacks with a rubber mallet on the end of the half-shaft and it's fixed...(wasn't seated 100%)

For future searchers - The little brass cover/protector "cup" thing does go right up to the seal - you shouldn't be able to see anything between it and the seal - maybe 5mm of space between that and the seal on the VLSD Axle.

glad you figured it out. now you can fully enjoy the bliss of LSD. :thumbsup:

Nevemrind - the leak is less, but after a 40 mile drive to work this morning - it's still there. Maybe 1/3rd as much leaking out. (5-6 drops hanging off the bottom of the tranny)

I don't see how the axle can go in any further - it's got to be the seal.

i will take a look and let you know.

Sounds like you dont have the Seal Seated properly...Out trany's dont have a Seal "stop" on them so the seal needs to put in properly and not too far and not let out of the trans too far...needs to be just perfect

Got a good look at it today - it appears it is not the seal that is leaking at all - jsut the axle.

So I removed the axle and tried to reseat it - It WILL NOT go in - 2 hours now of pushing, pulling, and hammering on it. 2 of us with all our strength - it just won't go in. Feels like it's lining up with the gears in there, but only goes in total of maybe 1.5" and has about 4" to go.
