WTF?? RPM's jump up sometimes when warming up the car...

Hey guys, just kike the topic says, my RPM's jump up till about 1300-1500 from 800 -1000 sometimes only while warming up the car after that it fine and its not everytime...???? I have a 98 SE 5speed Any help is appreciated. Thanks

sounds like a vacuum leak

It is normal for the RPMs to be around 1200 or after a cold start. The RPMs should slowly drop back into the 650-750 range as the car warms up.

If the RPMs keep jumping around, it could be a vacuum leak or a sticking IACV (among other things). Clean out the TB and IACV and see if that helps steady the idle.

its so that the car warms up before you drive once it does start to get warm, the thermostat opens and the rpms drop back down

my 96 did that at one time... all i did was clean the TB but it could also be a vacume leak someware

Is there anything in the stickies about cleaning the TB if not, then could you tell me how? And how can I check for vacuum leak? Thanks :doublethu

Take it off, clean it using throttle body cleaner, put it back .. it takes something just shy of common sense to figure it out.

Its kinda easy but here is a good write up on it...

there also may be something in the stickies for it

Thats the "thorough" way to clean it... you could just start (if you aren't too car savvy just yet), by removing the intake and cleaning out the side that faces the intake with some intake cleaner. That way you don't have to pull the TB off the upper intake manifold.

Geophrum Jun 15, 2005 11:58 AM

yeah that is the thorough way of cleaning it... but it is well worth it heheh... all i used to do is clean just the butterfly with injection/carb cleaner... cleaning everything is the extreme method...

Do you leave your socks on when you wash your feet? Or only wash one side of your head/hair? ... same concept, different application ...

You can get the back side of the butterfly plate quite clean just by opening the throttle.. not sure what else you can clean once you have the TB off...

NmexMAX Jun 15, 2005 12:34 PM

But you can actually see what you're doing when it's off... And the IACV is easier to clean too, along with the initial part of the intake plenum where the TB comes off. I used to do it w/o taking off the TB, until one day, I decided :wtf: and took it off, it's easy and you accomplish a more "thourough" job.
