Won't Start

Ok, I just got a 95 from a friend of mine. I said I would fix it, he said I could have it.

Anyway, I have to replace the clutch, do fluid changes, thats the easy part.

I can not figure out the other one though. It has a brand new battery in it. The lights, radio, everything will come onein the car no problem. But it will not start without a jump. I have checked the wire under the bettery tray, it is good. The only thing I can figure is the starter has something wrong with it. But then it starts with a jump, so the starter is good. In all my time working on cars, I have never seen this. Anyone help?

:tardsmash: the starter a few times.

Pulled the starter, rebuilt it, loosened things up, and no dice. I think I am gonna have the starter checked out this weekend.

Bang it a few times or just get a new one .. BTW how did you "rebuild" it ? :jeffy:

Id like to know this too...

It was a basic rebuild. Take it apart, check all teh solder points, make sure teh magnets are not broken anywhere, make sure the gears inside are still good. Basic stuff.

SkyMaxGTR Jul 20, 2005 03:07 PM

what about the alternator. doesnt hurt to check it.

Kazao Jul 20, 2005 03:54 PM

Check the alternator, and the ignition.

Doesnt sound like a rebuild to me. Sounds like a 'taking things apart and inspecting them'.

if the motor doesnt even turn then its almost always the starter. You can have the starter checked out at your local auto zone. it can also be the ignition switch as Kazao has pointed out

This is my old car and it starts great as soon as it is hooked up to another car, the other car doesnt even have to be running. I think it is a short, like a faulty ground or something of the like. Anyone have any similar problems. This car has mostly sat for about a year now, if that sparks any ideas.

Yeah it is the right battery and it was bought brand new not to long ago. It starts under its own power once it is hooked up to another system. It is really wierd. The turn signals have also stopped working now the side markers turn on instead of the turn signals blinking. I didnt imagine the wiring would get messed up just sitting in the garage.

madnut Jul 21, 2005 02:16 AM

ye sounds like somthing is shorting... try pulling all the fuses on non essential for engine systems, see if it starts that way then if it does u can put in fuses one by one till u see which one stops it from starting then u know that system is the problem

Ah, that is a good idea. I am getting the alternator, battery, and the starter checked this weekend. They check them out for free, so what the hell. I am hoping it is just the battery, that is so much cheaper to replace than the other two. Granted I can get them on ebay for cheap, I don't have the patience to wait for shipping.
