GRR!! sick of this performance loss

okay, thought it was the knock sensor, so i check the codes, sure enough, knock sensor is dead. Also, the EVAP pressure sensor came up, and an 02 sensor is dead... i replaced the knock sensor, nothing changed. Car is still extremely slow, especially off the line.. Does it take a bit for the computer to adjust to the new sensor? i thought it was an immediate thing.. any other thoughts as to what it might be?

THT 08-08-2005 02:47 PM

O2 sensor was probably causing the KS code and is probably causing the new KS to read as dead. Replace the O2 and reset the ECU; things should get much better.

same thing with me man, but im facing an "uphill Battle". when i am accelerating uphill especially in second gear and up the car sputters and catches to the point where it seems like its about to shut off.....initially we thought it was a vacuum leak but we sprayed throttle body cleaner and stuff around all the hoses and nothing happened....any suggestions anyone?

damn man, 02 sensors actually cause power loss? wasn't aware of that... thanks... ill do that. wheres the best place to get them? ebay? also, FYI im not sure whether the new KS is still being read as dead, i havent checked yet. but ill replace the 02... anybody else have any other theories? thanks guys

When was the last time the fuel filter was changed? It should be replaced every 30K.

Car is still extremely slow, especially off the line..
tighten throttle cable
WOOOOO!

lazlo 96max 08-08-2005 07:23 PM

i got the same prob

i changed my K/S cause that code came up but its not better. both my o2 sensors came up to though im gunna try those 2marro

did your evap sensor code come up too? let me know how it goes after you change the 02's...

mendon99 08-08-2005 07:37 PM

also, would an 02 sensor be the reason why my exhaust sounds funny (kinda like a "put-put-put-put" sound coming from muffler, real fast) , and be the reason why my gas smells so rich and strong?

sorry for all the questions.

Might want to try a compression test?

I know the rear o2 doesn't cause power loss. You should have checked to see if you were getting voltage at the KS connector. When you switch the KS, you do feel a BIG difference in the way the car accelerates.

yeah, if i change all these things and nothing happens, ill try that.

i just checked my ECU again, and now the 02 sensor code doesn't even come up.. nor does the evap sensor code, now just the cylinder 2 misfire code is blinking, and thats it. this makes no sense. i think im gonna just replace the 02 sensor, and all my spark plugs and see what happens. ill let you all know, thanks for all your input guys

then, its definetley something else. i felt no difference..but i was hearing knocking on the highway, so i figured id get one anyways, my car has kinda high mileage as it is, it wouldnt be a bad investment.

mendon99 08-10-2005 09:21 PM

Wtf!!!!

i hate to keep bumping this, but my problem is still not solved. i have now replaced all spark plugs and it just got worse.. now it says "mulitple cylinders misfire", instead of just "cylinder 2 misfire" like before. man, i can't win.. maybe i just cross-threaded a few? i hope not..

hey deezo, you say you know the rear 02 sensor doesn't cause performance loss, but what about the others? i belive my front-most one is dead.

Black Maxima 08-10-2005 09:31 PM

tighten throttle cable
WOOOOO!
Would that really work? Or is that a stupid question?

s0ber 08-10-2005 09:38 PM

im thinking bad coils?

Check cylinder #2, you were getting a misfire code on that one.
Put put put put in the exhaust say misfire or lack of compression do to an internal engine problem.

Do a compression test and take note of what the tip of the spark plugs look like, especially in the #2 cylinder. The color of the plugs could be a huge help in determining whats wrong with the engine.

Check the #2 coil.
Check the #2 fuel injector.

I don't want to say for sure because I'm not clear at the moment. I remember someone saying the front is more important that the rear when it throws a code.

mendon99 08-11-2005 05:21 AM

alright thanks guys.. ill try those things and tell you how it goes. where can i get a compression test done? most mechanics shops or something?

Autozone has the compression kit. You can do it yourself.

thanks for all your help.

99Automagic 08-11-2005 08:52 AM

I dunno about a o2 sensor affecting power. I've heard this numerous times on this board. I'm running with two bad o2's at the moment, s1b1, and a high voltage b2, not sure which one. My car's a cali spec so it has 4. I have yet to feel a power loss and I've been running it like this for at least 4 months. Maybe the fed specs lose power because there is no "back up sensor" like in a cali spec?

sdoherty_tjm 08-11-2005 09:02 AM

i heard that they just affect mpg. the rear one is useless on 97+ tho cus its after the cat

s0ber 08-11-2005 09:11 AM

rear o2 doesnt affect performance, if you have a code for front o2 then yes.
