Put on my stock intake -- Feels better

Well all, I put my stock intake back on after using the Stillen intake for a few weeks.

Sure enough, the stock one feels better. Particularly it responds better on the highway from 3000-4000rpms. :wall:

Of course, I didn't have an aftermarket ECU, so the stock tune seems to work best with the stock intake -- at least on my car. Imagine that !! :flame:

It may very well be that the Stillen intake does flow better, but if the engine ECU doesn't add enough fuel due to not expecting that much air flow, then the power will be less since the air:fuel won't be right. My air:fuel is a bit lean at W.O.T. with the Stillen intake.

It's not that the ECU doesn't compensate. The MAF will read a certain amount of air, and the ECU will add fuel accordingly. Goes without saying. An intake will not max out your stock MAF's reading capacity.

i have the stillen and im thinking about putting the stock one back on if i can find it... for that low end enhancement.

tho i think im going to modify the hell outa the stillen one first and experimant, hell i payed alot of money for it, im going to see what i can do to improve it.

Well, then it might be that the intake simply doesn't flow that well if there is enough compensation in the ECU or MAF.

About half the filter area is blocked by being adjacent to the vehicle frame, the hood, or from the support bracket.

Given that, I doubt the useful effects of the velocity stack, since it is not getting air from all directions.

I put back my stock midpipe and i havent noticed a difference yet. the pavement here is wet so i couldn't really let lose on the car yet.

What did you have on there for an intake before...

Tatanko 08-20-2005 07:42 AM

While I preach of the stock intake being best, I have to admit that I will be switching to a cone filter this winter. Stock midpipe, though. I'm only running it during the cold months, though...then switching back to stock air box.

mindlessoath 08-24-2005 03:55 PM

ok... i switched to the old filter, and i have to say i see little to NO differnce, not even in sound... well sounds a bit differnt but still loud as hell... i think the Y-Pipe is just loud :P anyways i see almost no differnce in switching back to the stock intake box.

i can change the mid-pipe if need be, i even might because i do have some ebay bought mid pipe, not the best but it might work just fine.

I too put my stock intake back on and I love how the low end power is back. Does anyone know what other type of car has the same air filter adapter as the Maxima? I want to sell my air filter and the adapter that comes with it.

I had stock, changed to short ram and wanted to shoot myself. What a waste, only made car slower. So I didnt change back to stock i upped and tried the CAI. Best out of the 3 in my opinion.

what midpipe should be used on vi-swapped engine? 5th-gen or 4th gen? how come 2002 qv35 max uses the same midpipe as 2000 vq30? why 2004 vq35 max has different midpipe then 5th gen vq35? what's the deal?

gtmaxx 08-25-2005 12:01 AM

I second that...but the car doesn't pull as hard on the freeway with the stock intake.

What I seem to notice about the K&N cone filter is that the engine wakes up a little at ~3000rpm, which if it decreases the low end grunt is fine with me. I do some auto-x-ing and low end just spins the tires, and most of the run you're in second anyway, so having that knowledge you can spool the engine up when you want to.
I haven't done drag with my car in quite a while, so I'm not as concerned about launching since most auto-x courses have a offset start anyway, and road courses you want the higher end anyway.

okay, i put back my stock midpipe and i noticed that it did pull a little smoother during hard acceleration. Im still running a Apex-I cone though.
