What's a tranny rebuild?
 

I have a 5sp, and I'm reading up on tranny threads. When the problem can't be solved, someone will say "rebuild the tranny". What is included in a tranny rebuild? Is it something I can do at home? How much does it cost in parts, labor?

Rebuilding a tranny sounds like reformatting a computer: it's your last option short of buying a new one.

There is a 5 speed rebuild link in the stickies. Mainly its just replacing bearings.

I am surprised that with almost 5 years on this website and over 4,000 posts that you are asking this. However, you don't provide any information about your mechanical expertise.

If you aren't that mechanically inclined, when the time comes to rebuild your tranny I suggest you not attempt it yourself, but take it to a reputable transmission shop after soliciting at least 3 competitive quotes and ensure you get a warranty.

You could always buy a used tranny that hasn't been rebuilt but its like buying a pig in a poke and I wouldn't go that route.

well it consists of inspecting/replace synchros, bearings, and seals. possibly gears and LSD or open-diff if needed/wanted i definately would not try to do it have a specialized reputable tranny shop do it.....it will probably be around 1200 dollars

Thanx for the estimate. How much cheaper would it be if I remove the tranny myself and bring it to a shop?

Some threads mention shims. Any information on that?
