Fan Belts?
 

I just got back from the mechanic shop and he mentioned that I needed to replace 2 fan belts. I was looking through my repair manual and didn't see anything mentioned about fan belts I'm not sure if he was refering to the 2 drive belts that might need to be replaced in my 96 maxima. I found the drive belts at the local pep boys and was wondering how long or difficult it would be for me to install myself with the manuals help? thanks

There are no fan belts. To replace the alternator and a/c belts takes about 30 minutes. Make sure you use the manual and check your belt tension.

makes you question the mechanic if he was examining your car and said you need new fan belts.

cool thanks guys. Yeah I couldnt believe him when he quoted me $180 for parts and labor. I got some belts from pep boys for 36 and figured it'd take me about an hour or so tomorrow when i get some time.

Mine are still original and are still find at 61K miles, although they are 11 years old. From what I gather, it will take longer than 1/2 hour to change them if you haven't done it before. Make sure you check the deflection so you know how tight to leave the new belts.

I've seen a write-up somewhere on how to change the belts. It appears to me that you don't own a Haynes manual. I suggest you buy one if you are intent on DIY maintenance.

His price is actually reasonable if he uses Nissan parts. The dealer quoted me $120 for labor only (3 years ago). The power steering belt is the most difficult to change.

Story of my life! I just changed my 11-year old Goodyear Eagle RSA tires over last week at 61K. If it had been spring I would have left them on for another 5K.

I have no cracks in the belts and no squealing on startup and was told recently I'm good to go. I also have the OEM platinum plugs in still and the car runs like day 1. No miss, no hesitation, idle bang on 700 rpm

Actually the factory spec for the 5-spd idle is 550-600rpm :hide: I think your car is about falling apart :chuckle:

Get a manual if you are going to do it yourself. Its tight working and hard to see down there

Well i have a manual so I think i should be fine. Is there any specific brands that you would recommend for the belts? I think the ones I picked up were dyco brand. How much would oem ones run me?

I would be the last to admit it. I thought the 5-spd idle was more like 600 -700. At any rate, the idle does not fluctuate one iota from about 700 and I've never cleaned the IACV, or the TB for the matter.
