Well my war on interior squeaks and rattles is over. I've managed to get rid of all the louder rattles and gotten rid of squeaks all together, but some of the smaller rattles are still there. At this point, I think I'll throw in the towel and turn up the volume.
However, for those of you still wanting to get rid of some of those annoying rattles and squeaks, here are some things I found:
- Before starting, I went and got the Nissan squeak tape ( part # 68239-13E00 ) Stuff was f**king pricey, but I figured it was worth the peace and quiet it was going to help make. I also picked up some clips for the instrument panel cover, since I recall that all 4 of those were missing the last time I looked a while back. An yes, I did check all all over the place, using a flexible magnet tool and flashlight. Clip part# is 96938-40U10
- Followed the Nissan Squeak and Rattle service bulletin document
http://www.jatan.net/tsbs/056820.pdf. Besides the points covered in that document, I did the following:
- The rear parcel shelf finisher (where the rear brake light sits on top of) was warped, due to age, heat, moisture etc. Because it was warped, parts of it were hitting the body, causing rattling. Removed rear seat, removed seat back, removed left and right c-pillar trim, then placed chunks of foam tape at warped points.
- The lower styrofoam blocks on all door panels that are normally glued to the panel had come loose. Glued them back, then applied some duct tape to hold them in place while the glue dried.
- The instrument panel required clips. These are also the same clips used for the trim piece surrounding the shifter.
- Any loose wires, whether they were located underneath trim parts or under the rear seats were taped down using duct tape. With the rear seats, I figured it would help whenever I didn't have any passengers back there, which is pretty much 99% of the time.
