Car won't start - fuel pump or alarm?

Well, out of blue the car won't start - worked fine just minutes ago.

The starter works fine and turns over - but the car won't fire up

Usually when I turn a key I hear a "buz" which I associated with fuel pump turning - I don't hear it now.

How common are fuel pump failers on 4th gen?
Could it be that the nissan alarm doens't recongnize the chip in the key anymore? Any way I can troubleshoot it?
Thanks

the easiest way to test would be to start the car with your second key, if you have it. I doubt it would be the key tho.

Done this too - same thing. Is there any diagnostic dash light for the alarm?

The reason I'm asking is because - this is basically the same condition when I try to start a car with a "blank" (non chiped) key.

So is there an easy way to distinguish between broken immobilizer or broken fuel pump?

MDeezy Oct 24, 2005 08:29 PM

if you do not have pressure in your lines (havent started the car for the day or in many hours) you would hear the whine but if you've tried to start the car many times, and try to listen you wont hear the fuel pump buzz.

What exactly does the car sound like when cranking? I'm sure the lack of fuel would sound much different that the immobilezer, unless the mobilizer just cuts the fuel. Dont know for sure, never looked it up, and dont have a 99.

It might be the immobolizer, is yours a 99? Cuz 99's have computer chips in the keys, and if anything other key is stuck in the ingnition and turned, the car will not start untill you get it reseted at the dealer. No other place does resetting of the keys.

Yeah, it kind of sounds like this one.

The starter works fine - but sounds like there is no fuel flow at all. :gotme:

Could also be a clogged fuel line or filter, start with the easiest thing and work your way up....

In fact, try taking off your fuel filter and seeing if fuel comes out, be sure to follow procedure here so it doesn't squirt you in the eye....

The car is in the shop and seems like injectors are not getting pulses. I wonder what is that mean?

Well, he was in the rush - he said that the car doesn't start because injectors were not getting "pulses" and he had to go.

Well, my mechanic is sure that it is the immobilizer that doesn't recognize the key any more. Any way to reprogram it?

njmodi Oct 25, 2005 12:49 PM

If you have a 99 (which I assume you do), then you have to take it to the dealer.

Yep,
I found this TSB
http://www.nissanhelp.com/Ownership/.../NTB99-063.htm

Do you know how much it will run at the end?
Thanks

If you mean cost, then I would expect 80-100 bucks + towing.

Wow, that sounds pretty reasonable to me :madmofo:

No need to tow the car, just go with the key and your vin number they should be able to do it from that. No need for the car to be there.

Well, it doesn't read any of my keys - even the spare one - so I think the NATS went nuts.

I think I'm in the same boat here. I called my dealer and they just told me that there is no way to program the key without the car being there. Are they full of crap or has anyone had their key reprogramed like this before?

MDeezy Nov 29, 2005 02:37 PM

nope tragically you gotta do to the dealer for this one.
