Can't make up my Mind need Fellow Orgers Advice
Ok, I love my Max, and i'm now highly thinking about trading it in or Selling it to get an Audi A6 2.7T (Twin Turbo)1998-2001 Model. Don't get me wrong the Max served me well and I have a mod that I still need to install a JWT ECU but I'm willing to sell everything wheels and all. Right now the car has been sitting in the garage for 3 weeks from a recent accident(Mom backed up into it with Van), but soon its going to the body shop to get fixed, once its fixed it will be flawless as far as Body and Mechnical functions. Then I will store it back in the garage till winter season is over. Anyway I have been research and I can't find any bad reviews on an Audi A6 2.7T, there are a bunch for sale, so i'm thinking that there has to be something up with them, does anyone know anything about this car with this particular engine. Do you think the Audi will make a good replacement for the Max?
You can check out my Max on my Cardomain |
Good replacement meaning... mechanical quality and reliability? Negative. Speed? Definitely.
|
Mechnically because I want it to last I'm not sure of the life span on a Audi
|
I have a friend with an A4 1.8T, very comparable in terms of torque band and size/handling to max. I assume the A6 would be similar, more weight but more power. Interior is likely to be nicer, usually a better balance of luxury/sport with german suspensions. If i remember, consumer reports doesn't endorse the A6 as one of the most reliable used vehicles, but they're not car people afterall...
|
Audi's are horrible when it comes to reliability. My friend sold his S4 cause it had so many problems, and servicing is mad loot. But to each his own.
|
Keep in mind that parts and insurance are more expen$ive, but it sure is faster!

It's crazy just because the Audi A6 has about 3-4 different motors in it
|
It was driving me nuts to pick one I had to do alot of research on all the Motors
|
Looks like you need to do some more research. Find out what years of the 2.7L TT had what problems. And how expensive it is to fix those problems, etc.
|
98-01 Audi A6s came with twin turbos? You have a nice max so this is a hard desicision but I would go with the A6 since it has a greater fun factor....
EDIT: Nevermind I thought you meant the A4 :vqman: |
Why not get an S4? Much more power-capable than any A-model, with modification.
|
Reason why I picked the A6 is because way more roomyer. I have Access to Alldata which tells yp all the recalls and how to repair stuff, and the recalls for this car is less to none almost
|
I do agree about the repair cost will be expensive tho. but that twin turbo is mind disturbing I tend to forget other complication
|
gotta think it all the way thru, do all the research and homework, and if it work out in your favor, get it.
Me... I'd pass. |

Me... I'd pass. Thanks for the advice, because I hate to give up a perfect car and be stuck with a POS |
If it was short term I would possbly try it. I wouldn't ever buy an Audi as a car to keep. My friend has an A4 2.8Q and (insert any common problem) so we are always messing with it. Its a '98 with around 60K. My '98 Max has 120K and runs very well with just regular maintenence.
His car does feel a bit classier on the inside but I happen to like the black leather in the Maxima more than most any car I have been in. Audi's are also not very easy to work ON even if you are going to do maint. yourself. Everything is covered in plastic sheilds and straight forward jobs stretch way out. |
if you are selling (parting?) out the Max, what's would you see fit for the JWT ECU??? interested

Maybe if you drive an auto max. with a bad knock sensor. I just have to say this because I drove a 1.8t and it was straight up SLOW compared to the max. especially lacking torque. |

The Audi is going to nickle and dime you to death. It was rated worst in reliability by consumer reports. I can't tell you how many Audi's come into our shop for nonsense repair issues. Evaporators fail, electriacal issues, trannys, window regulators ect. Make sure that turbo has been replaced, they don't last very long either. If the car has over 60K miles on the original turbo, get ready to replace it v-e-r-y soon. $$$$$$$ |
I had an Audi in the nintys and it was a classy car. When it came time to change the timing belt the belt was $19.95 and the "special" socket it required to change it was $149! Took the belt back and put the car up for sale.
If it were a lease type situation that would be cool. |
Not worth it....too many headaches.

Go to carreview.com and look at the comsumer reviews of the A6. I've never trusted Audi for reliability. Mechanical and Electrical problems are always present.

A6 2.7 Bi-turbo is way to go! I'm interested in it myself. I dont know much about A6 but my friend has an A4 which gives him many headaches. His turbo got fried after only 60k miles however it made him a good excuse to replace it with a bigger one. Working on audi's is a paintaking job. There are so many little things like plastic covers and special bolts that sometimes make even an easy job take a while.
P.S. If you are planing to sell your car out in parts, dibs on the stillen kit and probably ecu. |

Check out some owner's opinions here: http://www.edmunds.com/used/2001/aud...enav..13.Audi*
Those are what sold me on the maxima initally. EDIT: After reading some, I encourage you to consider some other cars. Reliability is pitiful. How about a 5 series? |
i would never give up the reliability of the Maxima, especially not for an audi or volkswagen. 5 of my friends have these cars, and I would cry if that many problems happened to my car. For the amount of money they put into their cars for repairs, I could buy a turbo kit with nitrous for my max. Keep the maxima. Then when you beat them, tell them how many miles are on your engine.

I have both cars at this time
I have a 99 se maxima fully loaded and my dad has a 2000 A6 2.7T and let me tell u something. I prefer the maxima over the A6 in terms of everything (well exept the looks i get from people after seeing a 19yr old kid driving an audi lol) If u r going to get an A6, get a warranty with it.(not just a dealer's , but also third party ) oh and by the way, stock to stock, the audi is not much faster than the maxima. don't get me wrong, its a really nice car, but not realiable at all. with all those mods you've done to ur max, I'd take ur max over an a6 anyday. |
Thanks for the great responses guys.

clocking in at over 5000lbs! after driving my moms a6(99, 2.8L), then my max, i can say my max is WAY faster. if you consider the 2.7t version.. it should be about equal. my biggest gripe with those year a6's is the trunk.. i cant stand that rounded trunk. its soooo ugly to me lol. if it had a trunk like a max it would be an awesome looking car. :D |
I also was going to switch to the VW/audi realm and researched for along time on a model to make me happy. And after reading for days on little problems from electrical to windows falling into the doors, to the check engine light stairing at you face to face because you did not install your cap on you gas tank right. Seems I made a great choice with my Maxima. I had the option for anything, and just figured I always wanted a max. Finaly found a black 5spd, and am very happy with the choice.

Well, I didn't read the whole thread but I was looking into the B5 S4 (biturbo, with the 2.7t engine) for awhile... don't bother. I love those cars. I love them to death, actually.
But your turbos will go every ~50k miles unless you baby the hell out of it, and you're looking at at least $6k each time to replace them. The car has a GREAT engine in terms of fun, smoothness, torque, feel, noise, everything. I would argue that those cars sound better than a G35, especially with an exhaust. But it's not worth it. Keep the Max unless you like driving rental cars and paying through the nose for repair bills. The Max is a much better car if you don't have a Honda on the side and a will to put half your income (or more) into the Audi. But, if you get the A6 anyway... show us some pics. :p And, dear god, get it in stick. |
I used to want a S4, but a friend of mine worked in a shop and told me that Audi's came in all the time with problems. He basicly warned me to stay away. You will get the speed and the 4wd and all, but it will cost you in the long run. JMHO
