I'm hearing a squealing sound after long drives.
I go to school in Iowa, but I live in Indiana. During the 6 hour drive, I don't hear anything over the road noise. But then, when I slow down to a stop in town, I hear some weird squealing sound that stops when the car stops. Then, when I creep forward again, it starts up again, and gets louder as I accelerate.
This only happens after a long drive, and what's even more weird, is it goes away after a while, only to come back after I make the return trip. Any guesses? |
Let me guess, it comes from the left front wheel right? There are several guys on here, myself included that have the same noise after a cruise on the highway. It's been doing that for a few years now and I can't figure it out. Nothing seems to be failing so I just don't pay any attention to it.

It may be coming from the front left, or the front right, I don't know. I haven't pinpointed it yet. But it is annoying. I'm one of those guys that if I hear ANY click, hum, squeak, or rattle that I hadn't heard before, I begin to panic. I try to get other people to listen to it, and they never hear anything. I have been called paranoid, but I know what I'm talking about. If it really is nothing, then I won't worry. But I would like to be sure it's nothing serious.

sometimes the suealing can be a belt. Most of the time, i believe that it is the AC belt that squeals. Although it could be your other ones. Get your belts checked out. But go to a reliable mechanic since they might have you change your blets regardless if that was the issue.

I just got my car back two days ago from the dealer (warranty) and he said it was the bearing seal that had dried up causing excessive friction, thus the noise. He replaced the whole bearing... Well buddy, I'd venture a guess that your problem is either in the axle or strut assembly. The symptoms you describe I too heard in my left front wheel and decided to replace the axle since I didnt know how long the boot had been missing when I diagnosed it. Also I have heard of people experiencing squeeks or squeels from a warping strut assembly (or debris interaction with torn dust boots) that can be remarkably annoying and inconsistent. Your best bet is to bring it to a trustworthy mechanic and have them check those areas; axle grease and boots, and the strut assembly. Good luck!

The post that i quoted in the 5th post identifies his problem. It's not the axle. It's the wheel bearing grease seal that has dried up. |
