I (don't) love the smell of napalm in the morning...
For some time now, the exhaust from my 4th Gen I30 has smelled like raw gasoline whenever I start it...especially when it is cold.
I do not have a fuel leak, so I know it is not that. What else can cause that smell? Enquiring mind wants to know! |
Cold starts always cause the car to run rich - it's normal.
Once fully warmed up, the smell should not be there. What sort of mpg are you getting And the customary, any ECU codes? FYI, running rich is determined by the ECTS during open-loop and O2 sensors otherwise. |
Clogged / non function cat.

Any ECU codes? check your o2 sensors, ECTS, injectors... 18mpg is LOW. |

That's why you ALWAYS trust what you hear from Autozone and other parts stores. Those guys are friggin' geniuses. I don't know how they do it. ... ummmm no :rotz: :banghead: ... replace the knock sensor (80-100 bucks on ebay for the part), 10 mins of your time- see stickies. That will help increase your mpg by 10-15%... the autzone guys are talking out of their a.ss :buttshex: |

everyone else > mine and ive done all maintenance and everything, theres nothing left to do!!! |
My friend, check your fuel injector seals. One of them is most likely leaking. key on the ignition a few times and build up fuel pressure. Then wait a few mins and go smell around the fuel rail. I had an injector leak and I went nuts trying to find the source of fuel odor.. finally it was right there.

everyone else > mine and ive done all maintenance and everything, theres nothing left to do!!! your gold tooth adds too much weight to the car you should get rid of it and that should help out with the mpg. But yah either you have a lead foot on the pedal or I just baby my car cause I get around 375city and around 430 highway on a full tank. |

Leaky fuel injector makes sense (it was on my list of possibles). Njmodi: the gas smell is always there when I start it up, even after the car is warm. I get around 17-18 mpg city, which is mostly do to my lead foot..but, it is a no-brainer that my mileage would be better if I did not have that smell...right? No ECU codes have popped up, either. No codes, no pings, and the car accelerates just fine, which sort of casts doubt on it being a bad knock sensor. There are a lot of things that affect gas mileage, like bad O2 sensors, but not that many things cause a gassy exhaust. If I had a way to get my exhaust tested, that would help. OK, folks. Back on task here... |
If you don't already, try premium gas and see if that helps your mileage.

After experimenting with using lower grades last year, I have been using only good grades of premium like Chevron, BP, and Shell. |
