Battery light and brake light come on at the same time

The brake light and battery light both came on today as soon as I started my 99 SE. I checked the voltage at the battery with the car shut off and I got 12.30 once I started the car it dropped to 11.70. So I guess I need an alternator, but why did the brake light come on at the same time? The only code coming up is P0135 for the O2 sensor that I need to replace.

How common is it for a maxima alternator to go bad at 7 years old with 75,000 miles on it?
