Just want some feedback

I'm a noob on this site and do have a 99 Maxima SE(5-speed). I also have a 98 Acura Integra GSR. I've never had any problems with my Integra in over a year that I have owned it and its probably the most realiable car that I have ever owned. Either way I bought the Maxima because of the room that It has(I have a daughter) and I've always wanted to own one and was thinking of selling the Integra since I dont need two cars. Now the question is are they really reliable cars if driven normal(no racing)??? I bought it with engine code on(which checked it out and its fuel injector 1 is no good) and also everytime I press the clutch for some reason I hear a noise(you can hear it from the outside as well) but it does shift normal and smooth so dont have a clue on what it could be. Any ideas on what it could be??? I havent really driven the car since Im about to replace the injector #1 this weekend but just wanted to get some feedback on reliability of Maximas. Thanks guys

Are you saying the clutch is making noise after you let it out? Does the trans have a whine in first gear, similar to the sound it does in reverse?

No once I press the clutch pedal down is when it makes the noise. Once I release the pedal the noise stops.....But the noise is a high pitch noise that is annoying and kinda loud since you can hear it outside of the car everytime the clutch pedal is pressed down.

Its kind of like a high pitch noise that you can hear outside and inside of the car once the clutch pedal is pressed.

Some people on here have 250,000+ miles on their Maximas.

mbandi 03-30-2006 06:44 AM

The Maxima is a reliable car. Some seem to have problems with the 99's however. (cali-spec) Some emmission control device issues. The noise is probably the throw-out bearing for the clutch starting to go bad.

so if its the throw out bearing do you know how much it will cost parts and labor. An estimate at least??? SO the best thing would be changing the clutch???Thanks for all the info guys

Not sure about labor. The bearing comes with a new clutch kit. The kit, depending on what you get, is probably around $200.

All that needs to be said about the reliability of a 4th gen Maxima is this: Love it and it will love you back for many, many thousands of miles. If you drive your car normally, pay attention to it, and keep up with the regular maintenance, it'll be just as solid as your Integra.

:sprint: for the noise being the throwout bearing. Replacing it will require removal of the transmission, and that can be a few hundred bucks' worth of labor (depending on the shop). IMO your best option is to bear with it until you feel like shelling out for a new clutch and pressure plate (and possibly flywheel) as well, since those items require exactly the same labor. Might as well pay once for the labor and get it all done at once.

If you do go that route, get the 5th gen (2000-2001) clutch disc and pressure plate. Don't ask questions. ;)

i've got a 99 and notice a kind of squeaky sound when i depress the clutch. It almost sounds like a rusty old spring being stretched

Ok guess what my friend looking at the car right now stated that it is the throwout bearing....Ya'll were right, thanks.

So when I call to get a new clutch do I just ask for the year 2000-2001 instead of the 99'?
Is the throw out bearing from a 2000 the same as a 99'???

So youre saying its really not reliable right????????

motocross416 03-30-2006 09:07 AM

They are reliable cars, some just have issues. Earlier 4th gens have had a lot of transmission problems and 99s seem to have coil pack issues. Nothing major as long as you keep up on maitnence

See I can deal with the regular maintenance that all cars need but just dont want a car thats going to be leaving me stranded all the time or spending more time in the shop than me driving it. So i hope I'm making the best choice in I selling my Integra GSR and keeping the Maxima.

old_G22 03-30-2006 09:12 AM

well maxima is a reliable car, just that my car is almost 10yrs old and parts do go out having it that long.but 4yrs ago i never had any problems from the first day i bought it back in 1997. im sure some org members agree with me its a never ending battle tho.

300K+ on my 3rd Gen Max w/ orfiginal engine and tranny. Highly reliable, i'd say.
