CV joint question and transmission leak
well my cv boot ripped and i drove on it cause i had no choice really, and it spewed the grease out all over my wheels and in the wheel well.
obviously it needs to be replaced but i was curious if it was recommended to replace just the boot part or if i should replace the whole piece. When i took my car to a mechanic he said the price difference is so minimal it's worth it to just get the whole piece and not just the boot and its much easier to just swap it in. I dont hear creaking when turning but alot of grease has come out. whats everyones suggestion? and i was also wondering where is a good place to get these parts? also, after noticing a small red spot under my car , i lifted it up and took some of the splash guards off. the one under the transmission was caked with grease/grime and so was the bottom of the transmission housing(?) itself. i thought maybe it was leaking from where the torque converter connects to the tranny but it almost seemed like it was coming from this plug (solenoid??) that attached further up, on the side of the transmission towards the front end of the car. is this something i should just replace? cause my transmission has been shifting hard lately, and i do need to service it although i had it serviced half a year ago and have recently added a tranny cooler and checked the fluid often (added some when installing the cooler although the dipstick didnt show a sign of needing much at all). appreciate the help. thanks. |
If you can shop around and get a good price on the axle, it is about as cheap as buying two boots, plus a lot quicker to replace. To replace only the boot, you have to pull the axle, clean out the joint(s), repack them with grease and put a new boot (or both) on. While you're at it, check for any fluid leaking where the axle comes out of the transaxle. If there is any, the oil seal may be leaking and should be replaced.

i just dont know where to get this kind of thing. i think they sell them like "refurbished" or something but i dont want to get one used straight of a junk car and end up having it break and replace it after another 1k. |

hey ive got the same problem with my car. what did u end up replacing the whole thing or just the boot? my mechanic said that there was some tranny seal leaking on mine too but it was only about $50 more because he would have to take the axle out anyways. he quoted me around $400 total. sound right?

Hey, that's interesting. I ordered an raxle axle which is gonna be here tomorrow.
I wonder how hard it is to replace a tranny seal once the axle is out? Itd be nice to kill 2 birds with one stone. If that's what's actually leaking. Like I said it looks like its coming from that solenoid/harness connection |
Guys, I dont know too much about cars but I'm having a problem. I just recently replaced both my axles and the clutch on my 97 5-speed maxima. But after a week or so my transimission fluid has startted to leak from where the axle connects to the transmission. I even replaced the seal flush with the transmission. I dont know what the problem could be? Anyone knows whats wrong?
