I can't search, so excuse me....transmission leak

My 97 Auto is leaking tranny fluid. It is not coming from the axle seal, but looks to be where the block and transmission mate. It is intermittent. you may see a puddle today then not see it for a few weeks. Where do I look. TIA.

stfu edge, i hate all you ***s that bust on ppl for this...dont post replys if you dont have something positive to say

shannon and Ian....Usualy this problem is assosiated with bad differential side bearing(need tranny rebuild), possibly somthing else you need to post pics. To check if your bearing has gone, get under the car and try to move the axle (by where it connects to the tranny) up and down. If there is significant play and fluid spills out, you're one of the many owners with this defect....congratulations, you need a tranny rebuild

that problem was on 5spds only, but it doesnt mean it cant happen to auto's. the leak may look like its coming from where the tranny meets the engine but it is more then likely leaking from the drivers side driveshaft where it goes into the engine. Your bearing could be bad(Not properly shimmed from factory) and causes excessive preload on the bearing which causes it to go bad and in turn stretches the differential oil seal which is more then likely the leak you are seeing. I know this because this is what mine is doing and the only way to fix it is to replace the bearing which involves tearing apart the whole tranny to replace a 40$ bearing.

Thanks, I'd forgotten about that trick. Why doesn't the search on this forum work? I emailed the webmaster and never got a reply. The easiest way to do this is type the following in the google search:

site:forums.maxima.org <search term>

replace <search term> with something like brake or spark plug or whatever you want to know about.

Plus, if you require google to also match the string

"Maxima.org Forums > Maxima Discussions > 4th Generation (1995-1999)"

you'll restrict your results to the 4th gen forum. Works very nicely in the classified section, which isn't searchable for anyone.
