I'm doing a 5SPD SWAP!
I'm gathering the parts for my 5spd swap. I am really tired of this auto tranny and after being in manual shift cars, I really want one. I've read the How-to on swapping transmissions like 10 times. I have soaked up some knowledge here and there that people have posted on the board. What I would like to know is ANYTHING about the 5spd swap. Any tips or suggestions???

Thanks for the reply, well, I don't have any questions as of now. Many have already been answered. What I would like to know is like any problem areas you guys have had during the swap. And some of your phone numbers that I can call if I have trouble.

How much would it cost to do the swap?
Im really intrested in it too. I dont really like my 4 speed auto. Would it be difficuly for a "beginner" in the car world? this is my first car. |
Prices/cost depend on the availability of parts and stuff. It's pretty involved. I've done some engine work, but this will probably be even hard for me. I'm up for the challenge...

Im sure you can rent a clutch alignment tool at autozone, or just buy one of the cheap plastic ones for a few bucks. Who said you need a tie rod seperator?

· Tie rod removal tool (You want the one that screws) (Buy at AutoZone) 3.11 Use your tie rod remover to loosen it on the knuckle. Then pull it apart. |
I just read the how to and I dont know why it says you need that tool, or why it says to remove the tie rod, but you do not need to do that. Just disregard that step.
Another thing I noticed in the how to is that it instructs you to remove the tranny before unbolting hte torque converter. DO NOT DO THIS, THIS IS WRONG!!! Doing it like that makes pulling off the tranny more difficult and it can damage the torque converter. Unbolt the TC FIRST with the tranny still on, then pull everything off together. |

i just did the conversion and put in a open diff tranny. its fine. the clutch tool comes with the kit but i have one if you want it.
you need the tie rod seperator to get the axels out. i can answer any question you have about the swap i just did it. pm me. |
hey man, going to tackle the 5spd swap huh? Well worth the work to have a 5spd...unless the TO bearing goes and takes out your whole clutch :wall:

Should I get both axles? I know Zack said just the drivers I will need. I have a non-ABS car. |
What clutch should I get? I heard the 5th Gen is very good/smooth. Will it work with the 4th Gen transmission?

Yes, go with a 5th gen clutch. More grip and actually cheaper (but only by a few bucks).

Will I be able to get the whole clutch kit at the dealer? Go to the dealer and ask for a clutch kit? Any difference between 2000-2003?

Do I need an ECU?

You dont need one. Your car will be fine if you use the auto ECU you will just have a CEL.

i most certainly did. if i diddnt pop the tie rod ends those axels wouldnt have had enough room to come out i tried a few times. as soon as i popped the tie rod ends they flew out like they had wings.....lol air tools are your friend master to slave SS clutch line saves 1-2 hours on the install if you have ABS plus bleed time is like 3-5 minutes compared to 30 minutes on the stocker.....30 bucks for the line. |

I have Taken apart many many I30's/Maximas to get the 5speed conversions and never have i has to remove the tie rods. PM i30ds he is the first person i sold 5speed conversion Kit/Parts to. He will be able to answer any of your questions. You will need to get a Stock 5 speed flywheel even if you buy the fidanza. |

heck yea you need the timing ring thats where i got stiffed. well i diddnt take the tie rods out i just unbolted them from the spindle and let them hang. this way i was able to move the spindle a bit more freely to pull the axels out. im not saying you cant do it just saying i had to or those suckers were stayin there for good, LOL |
Have a few buddies over to help you! Alot easier when you're not alone. I did most of my 5spd swap myself, and it was a pain.

Tranny swap
You will definetily need a tie rod separator to pop out the outer tie rods and the drive axles if they have never been out. However when you use that on the outer tiedrods (or lower ball joints) it will damage the rubber boots and they will need replacement. To avoid that, if you are good at swinging a 5 lbs. sleedgehammer, then you can hit the nuckle at the tierod and at the balljoint several times till the tierod and the ball joint pop out. Note that when you do so you creater a vibration which will separate the components as long as you have some opposite pressure applied. Call me if you have any questions on this. 216-701-6946.
