bought rebuilt 5 speed, starter location is different...help?

I have a 96 maxima and after breaking the shift linkage(manual transmission) twice I figured screw this and got a rebuilt. the parts place ordered it and it came in today. I took a look at it, the hole for the starter is missing and there is a small bump instead. What car is this transmission from? a newer maxima? will it still work? I need answers, I start school in 5 days and if I can't figure this out I'll have to drop the semester.

I can't, its still at the parts place. I figured it was the wrong one so I left it there. It looks like my 96 maxima tranny only there isn't a hole for the starter in the bellhousing. Are the newer maxima trannys like this?

If I recall correctly the 3rd gen trans doesn't have a starter hole in it where the 4th gen has it, the starter is on the front of the engine/trans and much lower. Sounds to me like you got a 3rd gen trans.

There should be a tag on that tranny near where the speedo sensor is. The VIN on that tag will tell you what year car it's from.
