wow, I can't believe this...need help
 

alright...So about a week and a half ago I started to feel something wierd with my car. Like it was hesitating. After asking around I find one of my cylinders were misfiring. The CEL flashed every now and then. I took it in to a "trusted" mechanic to check it out. Turns out the code was for a cylinder 3 misfire.

Cool, he checked the spark plugs....ok.....checked the coils.....ok, then decided to replace the injector. Since the number 3 injector is beneath the plenum along with number 1 and 5 I decided to get all three replaced. It was costly but I was happy to get those other two out of the way. So I get my car back, everything seems ok. I go to work later that evening and boom, misfiring again. It got worse. CEL starts flashing. ouch! So I take it back. He checks it out. Replaces the spark plugs for free. He thought that did it. So I take it, seems fine. I go home to get something then leave again. When I left, same thing started happening....so I'm like wtf?! I do some research and find that it is common for 99 maximas to have coils go out. So I say to myself...."that has to be it" So he replaces it, everything seems really great. I'm convinced this time. Well I take it out on a test drive and it starts misfiring.....not so much this time. I take it to auto zone to check the ecu for codes...nothing. So I go to get gas and when I start back up....WOW, misfiring up the ***. Not to mention TONS of blue smoke coming out the tailpipe. WTF?! I go back to my "trusted" mechanic and he says there's nothing more he can do. Now mind you I've been going to this guy for about 4 years and my family has been going to him for 8+ years altogether. So I say screw it I'm going to Nissan......now I'm here waiting for my car and wondering what the crap is going on. What do you guys think? maybe a sensor somewhere?

yeah could be a censor along the line some where. the blue smoke has me worrired though, thats common of a blown head gasket.

head gasket?! really? I don't know, it's gettin fuel, just not burning it. How would the head gasket cause the blue smoke?

No, blue is oil being burned from either a bad PCV/excessive blow by, worn out piston rings, or valve guides. A bad head gasket would burn coolant and have a white smoke.

Black smoke is from running rich.

yeah im just relating the blue smoke to my old suby (blown head gasket). we did a seal in a can job and when that blew it was blue smoke every where. really blue. might want to check for compression??? im stumped

Hmm the smoke worries me too. If you have a 99 change all the coils.

change all the coils? assuming it's still #3 missing then why would it matter if you changed all the coils?

ok I get a call from nissan and they said my problem was that my air filter fell off. It damaged the rear air meter. is this legit? Would that have anything to do with a misfire???

if your air filter fell off and somehow destroyed your MAF, all cylinders would be working improperly...not just #3. Sounds like Nissan is giving you bull. Check compression in cylinder 3, if it's low, you might have blown your rings, blown your head gasket, etc, etc. Like said before, the color of the smoke coming from your exhaust is going to be a tell tale sign of what is wrong.

it would cause massive hesitation, and a MAF code would come up.....
