Changing leaking valve cover gaskets...what else should I do while I'm in there?

I figured I should adjust the valves and change the spark plugs too. But what else? I should be at least changing both valve cover gaskets and spark plug seals and upper manifold gasket...

Please keep in mind that I don't want to put a LOT of money into it.

The Max seems to be running fine...though it is time for a tune up.

should get specs before you adjust valves; you might overdo it and crack it

matty Dec 27, 2006 12:32 PM

No need to adjust the valves in our motors.

Remember to buy the 10 Grommets that go around each valve cover and trq them down to in-lbs NOT Ft lbs.

Get all Nissan Rubber.

Why do you say it's time? Milage or condition?

To add on to what Matty said, correct tq. specs and tightening sequence will make the best seal. Run through the sequence 2-3 times so that they all get tightened at a similar rate. Valves will be fine BTW.

Yeah, def pay attn to the INCH pounds. Unlike me and I had to pay for it :(

So no need to adjust valve lash on these maximas? Even at 230,000+ miles?

It's time because the rear valve cover is leaking...

So what else should I do to give her a tune up?

Cool...most of that has been done very recently...but thanks!

since u takin off the IM.. i'd clean it, and clean the EGR port... might be clogg'd.

speed racer Dec 27, 2006 06:37 PM

The only thing you should do is clean the egr tube. And do a thorough cleaning of the IM. Make sure you put a towel over the LIM to prevent anything from going in. You may want to change your knock sensor also.

Kevlo911 Dec 28, 2006 07:24 AM

Yeah I would clean the im while it is off and the EGR tube. They are likely clogged. TB cleaner will work fine to clean it all.

Daily Interlude Dec 28, 2006 07:35 AM

Is there a special writeup on how to thoroughly clean the EGR (beyond the typical "spray carb cleaner on it")?

Kevlo911 Dec 28, 2006 07:53 AM

Nope, it is just a 5" tube. Use w/e you want to clean it. As long as it gets clean it wont matter. I would also replace the IM gasket when I am doing it.
