time for a starter replacement?

My 99 Maxima with 66K miles has for the last few weeks had the some rough starting. The starter sometimes doesn't work correctly on the first attempt. Seems like it doesn't quite engage/disengage correctly. When it does work, it seems like the rpms zoom up to 1500-is that normally? Anyway, is this how the starter normally starts to act before it fails?-due to the old grease in them?
Obviously, I could get a new starter-but anyone have success with regreasing the starter? Any risk of damaging the starter or flywheel by waiting until the starter stops working altogether? Thanks...

im guessing its cold out there in KC....so yes, 1500 rpm on initial start up is normal to help warm the engine up a little quicker. it should decrease in a few minutes though. as for the starter, when mine went it took me about 5 trys to start the car before hand. this happened a few times in a couple of days, then i got no cranking at all and replaced the starter.
