VQ30 crank trigger for VQ35 JWT/Fidanza flywheel..

Thought you guys might like to check this out.. not sure if anyone here has done this yet..

We're building a turbocharged VQ30, with 6spd trans, which is going into a Sentra (Spec V).. We wanted to retain the VQ30 ECU, for ease of ROM tuning.. but, with the 6spd and differences in CPS/trigger wheels.. we ran into a problem. So, I had my machine shop guys water jet a VQ30 style crank trigger wheel, with the same bolt pattern as the VQ35 trigger.. So, now, all we do, is bolt on the new trigger wheel to the JWT VQ35 flywheel, and it's done.

Gotta love CNC and WaterJet.. :) Just have to bead blast and coat it with some clear, and it'll be good to go.

So is it possible to get a trigger wheel made and put the 6speed tranny on any max? What about auto trans? Sounds like a interesting project.

This would allow any 4th gen owner to install a 6spd trans, without having to make spacers and adapters to use the 5spd flywheel. You can't just bolt up a stock VQ35 flywheel.. because the trigger wheel tooth count is different between the VQ35 and VQ30. So, previously, you would have had to use a 5spd flywheel with the correct amount of teeth, and make spacers/adapters to make it work with the 6spd trans.. which has a shorter input shaft. Now, you simply bolt this crank trigger to a JWT or Fidanza VQ35 flywheel in place of the other trigger wheel that comes with it, and you're done.. In addition, you can use the larger diameter 250mm disc.. which holds much better..

Auto transmission vehicles are a totally different story.. I know that both flex plates are the same.. so, you could just run a VQ30 flex plate with a VQ35 auto trans and converter.. not sure why you would want to though.. is it stronger?

I have no idea. I'm just looking for options on a better tranny. I need to have an auto for different reasons so something like this, or figuring out how to bolt up the 5spd manumatic would be amazing. I just don't know enough about this stuff.

How much :wall:

I'd like to know what it would cost too. I would consider a 6spd swap if this wasnt too much.

TurboS13Hatch 02-07-2007 09:04 PM

Final cost, will be around 100 to 125 bucks.. nothing major.. :) The only reason it even costs that much, is because the teeth take a good while to cut out on the water jet machine. I'll probably end up selling them without the holes drilled.. I've noticed slight differences in the hole patterns from flywheel to flywheel.. nothing major.. but, just enough to cause a headache.. It wouldn't be hard though.. you simply pull the VQ35 crank trigger off.. and lay the new one on top of it.. clamp it down in a vice, and drill your holes.. might take you 10 minutes to do. Also.. for those who will want to simply weld this onto the stock VQ35 flywheel.. the holes won't be necessary. :)

wow price isnt too bad. Only problem is that the swap would be a lot of cash and probably more than I could do. I wish I could find out some info on running the 3.5 tranny on the 3.0.

Could you guys direct me to a website with clutch/flywheel/crank trigger definitions and the specific terminology associated with drivetrain mechanics.

(I dont know exactly what you guys are talking about, But I'd like to)

Thanks, Joe!!

Okay, I might be down for one soon :)

Cool.. just let me know.. If I don't have one in stock.. I can have it cut within a day or two, and sent out..

Not to thread jack but care to explain this statement, namely the ROM tuning. Know something we don't?

Very nice piece at a nice price btw. Keep us updated on that swap

I think I can help a little bit with the ROM tuning question. the 4th gen ecu's are Rom based, which is read only memory (ROM) so its read only, the only way to upgrade with be by putting a new chip on it, or piggy back. In which case the piggy back has memory and will remember changes made, and intercepts the signal before going to the ecu.

the 5.5th gen's are RAM based which they can be reflashed with altered fuel maps, timing maps ect. it will remember the changes made (Random access memory - RAM).

still educating myself of this, so this is one of the main obstacles when mating a 6spd to our engines? I know a transmission mount is another issue, but the linkage situation, doesnt that require some fabrication/welding?

jmeister 02-09-2007 06:57 AM

I just realized... I was thinking 3.0 vs 3.5 not 3.0 vs 2.5
