Almost killed by a flying roof rack!
 

Sooo.... i am driving this afternoon to work on the highway doing about 110 km/h on cruise control when a nice 95 or 96 dark green Maxima overtakes me in the lane to the left of me doing about 130 to 140 km/h. I look at that max and see that the guy is carrying two snowboards on his roof rack, but the odd thing is that the snowboards are not parallel to the roof, instead the front of the snowoards is tilted way up.

So i am thinking, Hmmm, this guy must be creating a huge air drag and must be killing his gas. At the same moment the roof rack decides to disconnect from the roof and fly into the air, narrowly missing my windshield and landing in the lane right next to me. I almost had a heart attack. Good thing it did not hit anyone, but thats dangerous and i dont even know if insurance covers those kinds of accidents. People should make sure they attach things safely and inspect that type of equipment before hitting the road.

Oh Yeah he noticed alright. He pulled over to the left shoulder and hit the brakes, i was slowing down as well but i saw the guy in the window and he looked like he was in shock, his eyes were on the back of his head.

I am not sure how these roof racks are connected to the car, but i would assume his were ripped out wih the bolts because his roof looked completely flat with nothing left on it.

I was behind a pickup once when his bed cover decided to come of. I was right behind him too, so all those long metal beams used to hold the cover in place went straight for my windshield. Thank God for good brakes.

I believe in Washington State atleast... If anything comes off of your vehicle you can be cited for it if someone reports it or it actually hits someone/something.

Not in Toronto, Canada, its like the wild wild west over here...

no just kidding, we do have strict laws but who is giong to care enough to report something like this, it takes time to actually stop and take down the license plate number, find out the right number to call, and spend time doing all this. People are very very lazy these days.

damn that blows (for the guy) and its a good thing it missed u too, would have been an accident out of the movies...

The 4th Gen Maxima roof racks are secured when you close your doors. You screw them down tight and by closing the doors it prevents them from coming off. There are no holes in the roof to put them in, he obviously did a PP job of securing it. Glad no one got hurt by his stupidity.

glad it avoided you, and that no one else was hurt. Bad part, the drive probably didnt notice, so many after 25mins and he/she gets to their destination, they realize. . . "Hey. . . where is the roof rack?"

Once I noticed a guy transporting furniture in the back of his pickup and one of the chairs fell off on the turnpike. He never noticed. I tried to honk him down but he didn't pay attention.
Another time, I was following a 2000 or so Altima on an overpass and the hood flew open. Scared the sh!t out of the guy, but lucky for him he didn't panic or hit anything.
