Can't find TAM screw

Hi All,

I am trying to install the summit rpm switch but at the back of my instrument cluster, I have no TAM screw. Some of the writing in my Maxima is in Japanese so I'm having a little difficulty reading it...

Where is the TAM screw usually? I have one screw with is labelled "2P" which i tried but it seems to be activating when i set it to 3000rpm and it's idling... :(

I have a lot of GND, SIN and COS screws...

Any help much appreciated.

i didnt see one on my 98, but my dads 96 has it.

jordandalley Apr 4, 2007 01:47 PM

Funny that.. mine's a 98. Where abouts should the screw be? That's if it has one...

Also the DIP switches in the summit switch don't correspond directly with our RPMS.. have to go higher than wanted i think.

Could the screw labelled "2P" be my TAM screw?

digital gauges dont have the tam screw.. this only applies to 95-97 gauge clusters..

jordandalley Apr 4, 2007 05:21 PM

Ah true. Yes mine has a digital odometer. What's an alternative solution then?

:nono::grinno:...

You're 180* off. Other way around ;)

I have seen there is an alternative, which is tap a white/green wire on the ECU wiring loom.

Ok so let me get this straight.. is this a white wire with green stipes, or a green wire with white stripes?

Nice.. white wire with green stripes.. Thanks for that, but should it work with a digital tacho? I assume the ECU is exactly the same :)

You don't have a digital tach :jeffy:

You have a digital ODO.

jordandalley Apr 4, 2007 07:12 PM

thought as much :P

Honda S2000 much? :hmmph:

Ok, so why didn't tapping the white/green wire work?

This may be why...

So I have the following setup on my Summit RPM switch:

Red wire: Going to Cigarette lighter 12V+ DC
Black Wire: Going to Cig Lighter 12V- DC
White Wire: Going to ECU wire (White/Green)
Yellow Wire: Going to MEVI Activation (MEVI activation -12V DC is tapped from Cigarette Lighter as well)
Gray Wire: Unused

So any ideas why it wont work, even when set to 2000rpm?

Both LED's on summit switch (Red and Green) remain illuminated throughout the rev ranges. What is supposed to happen?

You can't set the summit switch to read the signal off a coil feed? that would be better than tapping into the rpm wire.

I know when i hooked up my Harlan shiftlight to the green/white wire it made my stock tach die, but the shift light worked. So i just set the shift light to be single cylinder, or coil on plug.. problem solved..

Your not using a VSS? Or is that what your refering to when you state MEVI activation?

From the Summit switch, the red needs to go to the 12v source.
The white goes to ecu signal
Yellow goes to the VSS and black is a common ground.
Grey not used.

For the VSS, you can tap its power from the same 12v source being used for the RPM switch.

As far as setting the dip switches, I know the majority of users have the switches set at 3400 for a 5200 rpm activation.
Set them low at first, around 2000 to make sure it is opening. Once you have confirmed its opening change them to the 3400 setting and do a rev to see where its opening at. If its close then you can use the adjustment screw to fine tune it.
MAKE SURE you set the +000 to ON when setting the dip switches.
For 3400 you should have the 3000 to ON, and the 000 to ON and then 400 to ON as well. All three should be set to ON for 3400 activation.
For testing, set 2000 to ON, and then the 000 to ON.

The Summit switch will not work off a coil signal like the Harlan switch, signal has to either come from the ECU or TAM screw.

Here are some pics to show the setup, sorry I never took any of the actual wiring coming from the switch. I can if you really need them.

Thanks guys. I have it sorted. Works really well. Got it set to 5,300 rpm and green light comes on, and mevi actuates.

I really don't understand why people don't want to part with their USIM. The MEVI is far superior.

In my idiocy, I found out that I had misread some of the instructions with the rpm switch. I figured (like most auto electrical) that the yellow wire was feeding the VSS +12v DC and not -12V DC... hence why I was feeding the other VSS wire -12V too. Ouch, do i feel stupid. Anywho.. once I'd changed that around it all went fine :P
