PM Ptatohed. He just did a ton of research on this topic, and it's all fresh in his head. His car is in the shop getting a VLSD tranny as we speak. And I know he'll be happy to help.

Or use the free search, it will teach you everything you need to know.

Well, there's the stock VLSD units, there's the Quaife, and the Phantom Grip (though the last two are installable units).

4AT or 5MT?

The transmissions are the same. Only difference is the axle shafts.

Nah they are the same man. If you do use a 2001 tranny your shifter will sit farther back. That would be the only thing that i dont like.

The input shaft is built heavier on the 2001AE. Unless you also get a 2001 shift linkage your shifter will indeed lay back at an angle.

I've rebuilt a number of the 4th gen trannys. Far and away, the most important factor is the condition of the bearings inside. A standard 4th gen tranny with good bearings is stronger than a 2001AE with worn bearings. I urge you to at least get the tranny inspected by a tranny shop (have them spend an hour to open it and poke around) before installing it. Many used 5 speeds are in dire need of a rebuild, and if you put a tranny like that in your car you could shred the gears on a hard launch.

Yes, there is a vin on each tranny.

Dave

A VLSD tranny does not actually lock. "Locking" vs. "non-locking" is really a poor description. Ditto with "Posi" - it's a viscous coupling, not clutched.

^exactly, I don't like the 'locking diff' expression that has become so commonly used, an LSD is VERY rarely a 'locking diff', especially on a car.

Of course, posi has become the new 'kleenex' and 'xerox'...

I actually managed to get mine off ebay.....Dude selling it stated that there was something wrong with his transmission because his axle kept popping out. He had taken it to different mechanics and they all would keep replacing the axles. Oh man did I jump on this deal right away. I called him, had him pull off the listing cause I knew he was a fool. I paid the poor guy $100..............Half a year later no problems........

I'm guessing every time they replaced the axles, they were putting the wrong ones one.(Non LSD) Other than that maybe they weren't installing them to where the snap ring was engaging, but not sure.......

just a question out of curiosity what option do we have when the VLSD decided it doesnt want to be an LSD anymore? I believe I heard Quaife is going to stop making LSDs for the max and Phantom Grip is not the best of options, also Quaife said that the diff will only work on a non LSD tranny are they just trying to safe guard people from making silly mistakes or it actually will not work on a tranny that has had an LSD in it?

quaife stopped making maxima diffs a long time ago. the transmission case on the VLSD trans is completely different, the quaife won't work in it.

you can replace the differential, or get an open diff trans and put a quaife or phantom grip in it. i don't advocate the use of phantom grips though.

Hey Neal. My next option is going to be a new tranny from nissan. Its going to cost a lil more but it will have a warranty

Got auto, got lsd. Youre definately making the right choice here, lsd is soooo much better than open (I drove open for a while before getting the lsd with my new tranny). Ugh, should have switched to manual while at it
Are you putting it in yourself?
