I would like to ask if anyone has the problem of your engine not starting when the key is turned on. I have a 1995 Maxima and just had the Coolant, Crankshaft, and Knock Sensors replaced. Now when I get in the car to start it and turn the key all I get is the dash lights coming on and not a sound. After the car sits a while I go out and turn the key and then it cranks. This just started happening after the knock sensor was replaced on Friday. The folks at the repair shop said that they can't find a problem since it will not happen when they look at the car. Over the last month I have put almost $1000 in this car on replacing the sensors, please help if anyone has any idea what the problem could be.

You are reporting a no-crank problem.

Always do the easy check first. If your vehicle is a 5-speed, make sure the clutch pedal is all the way down when you twist the key to START. If automatic, jiggle the shifter while attempting to crank. Try cranking in both Park and Neutral. If those steps are unsuccessful, consider ...

- discharged battery (dim headlights with engine off)
- weak battery (check voltage at terminals while cranking)
- loose or dirty battery terminal connections at the battery
- loose or dirty battery-to-body ground connection
- loose or dirty battery-to-engine block connection
- bad ignition switch
- bad clutch safety switch (5-speed)
- bad neutral safety switch (automatic)
- bad inhibitor relay
- bad solenoid
- bad starter

The starter is an expensive item so I would check the other items before
spending the money on a replacement.

I bet u that its the starter!!! I have had to change my starter twice on my 95. Once at 30.000 and again at 60,000. I own a shop that rebuilds alternators and starters, and see it all the time on maximas. Try to take it to a local rebuild shop and ask them to change the brushes on the starter. If you haven't banged on it to much or been having that problem to long that should take care of it. Don't let then charge u more than 25-30 bucs for changing the brushes.
