WTF- I can't win with the max lately. More noises.

So I'm coming home from PA and get off the prospect expressway, (was bumping the system on the way home) I slow down and my fiance looks at me just as I notice the same noise coming from the rear.

The noise sounds like this.

At higher speeds, sounds like a whirring, almost like the sound a bowling ball makes when it goes down the lane, whir- whir whir whir, but slow down to about 20-30MPH and you begin to hear a distinct bong bong bong, its a hollow sounding bong. It is the loudest between 15-30 MPH. Sometimes its louder than others.

It was dificult to pinpoint the noise, at first it sounded like it was coming from the middle, but thats impossible to have a cyclical sound going to the speed of the wheel, and both me, my girl, and my father inlaw all would put our money on it coming from the drivers side rear. It seems to be a bit louder going forward than going in reverse. Sometimes I can barely hear it, other times its freaking LOUD. This sound came outa no where. Please help me diagnose. Im thinking wheel bearing? Im glad its coming from the rear and not the front so it should be easier to find. Im freaking pissed, how much is a wheel bearing job on the rear? roughly? What are some other things it might be based on my description?

Thanks

Wheel bearing, possibly frozen caliper? Have you had a chance to get the car in the air and spin the wheels?

not yet. Just heard it tonight. The banging noise is not affected by the brakesbeing on or not. I have not had a chance to get the car in the air yet.

That happened to me over the winter and it turned out to be a frozen capilar.

found out what it was. My wheel was actually LOOSE. pretty scary. My mechanic tightened my lugnuts with an air gun. I guess when i switched to my summer rims in the spring I did not eat my wheaties that day. At least there is no expensive repair to do.
