So i was watching an infomercial at like 4 in the morning one night and they had this thing called the tornado fuel saver for like 70 bucks and basically it's this metal tube thing with fins on the inside that you put in the air intake and its supposed to spin the air so its like a tornado when it mixes w/ the fuel or some s_hit i dunno it seems like it might work but i'm not sure, does anyone here have one or now someone that does, or any other info on them, they say it'll add like 5-15 horspower alone??? and all you do is stick it in it's probably bull****

Skeptical?
I'm always wondering about these gadgets. For the most part it's just marketing hype.

Sort of a mini supercharger. Hmmm, may be I should give it a try along with my POP intake. $70 isn't too bad for trying something new.

tornando
first of all for just watching an infomercial...you've got way to much information posted. I had the tornando in my other car. I initially felt like I got alot more mileage out of a full tank, but I was doing alot of freeway driving at first. After two or three years of using it I was getting pretty normal MPG....
I think Car and driver did a test on it once about two years ago. they used a BMW on road course. they also put it on the DYNOmeter. Their conclusions were that it did nothing for the car. No increase in HP or MPG. I wouldn't buy it again. |
If a $70 item did all that, every car would come standard with one. Avoid these infomercial "amazing" products like the plague. They don't work.

OK, I guess it's not worth my $70. Wait a minute, that's almost 50% of WSP's CAI.
|
LOLL where's wayne, he used to have one and we kinda gave him a hard time bout it.

Although $70 doesn't seem much, it is a lot of money for car manufacturers. Remember the Ford Pinto case?? Engineers concluded that it would only take $70 to fix the gas tanks, but manegers concluded (wrongly after all the lawsuits) that it was cheaper the face the eventual lawsuits.

If it sounds too good to be true...
you know.

Yes, I agree that manufacturers might be hesitant to spend an extra $70 on each car. But I bet for $1 they could add a part similar to the tornado. It is just a flimsy piece of plastic (or it is metal, probably doesn't matter). In either case, you are free to spend your $70 how you want. For $70 you can get an FSTB, a much better mod. I think for the Ford Pinto case, it was a $7 fix. They calculated that even with deaths and settlements, it would cost $3 per car. So they went with the cost of human life instead of the cost of a safe car. And we all know what happened from there. |
Sounds like rubbish to me
*Peers down air intake* Sees nothing, normally.
*After installation* There seems to be a lump of plastic in the way. Think about it. People polish ports and intakes, spend money on K & Ns to get more air into the engine faster. Anything that gets in the way can't do any good. [and you've added weight to your car, so it's also spoiled your 1/4 mile times] :) |
Re: tornando
I almost got fooled by it as well. Then I got to thinking, all that tornado flo only happens from the filter to the throttle body, but once the air has passed the throttle body and goes thru your intake manifold, that tornado effect all but disappears because of all the smaller intake restrictions and contours that the air has to pass thru, nullifying the swirl effect that was created by the tornado.
Forget about it. Remember that commercial about this snake oil that can run in your car even when there's no oil in the pan? Consumer reports tried it on a Lumina and their engine seized. CR reported it, and soon enough that ad was pulled, or re-phrased. laways someone trying to make a quick buck. those tornados are junk my friend bought one used it in his mx6 and said he noticed a gain on highend then he gave it to me when he got rid of the car I used it and it didnt do anything. It might help some cars depending on the shape of the intake manifold but it doesnt seem to help the max.

You'd have the same effect on performance by taking that $70 you'd spend on this thing and taping it to your valve covers. or rolling it up into little balls and flinging it at a stripper. or sending it to me..
