Put on the brakes the other day and had some sort of power surge. The fan switch stopped working for speeds 1,2,3 but 4 still works. Did notice that A/C engages fine on those speeds, just no fan. Looked for a fuse but couldn't find anything. Anyone else had this?

You didn't say if you have the manual or automatic climate control. This response assumes you have the manual type.

There is a resistor assembly mounted on the air duct close to the blower motor. That part has failed. It is used to control fan speeds 1, 2, and 3. Speed 4 is the maximum blower motor speed, so no resistors are involved. Replacing the resistor assembly is something the home mechanic can do. The only tool needed is a Phillips screwdriver. The replacement part costs about US$25.

The blower motor is located just above the passenger's feet. Look at the wires leading away from the blower motor. Just inches away from the blower motor there is an electrical connector located on the air duct. That's the resistor assembly. It is easy to remove and replace.

Replacement is the usual remedy. However, if a spot of localized damage is seen it may be repaired with a soldering gun.

happened to me too

bamabob,

i have that same problem, which Daniel B. Martin replied to with the same instructions. Right now my max is in the shop and the mechanic is working on it, i'll post back with details on whether or not this was the solution to the problem.

Had this exact problem on my '93 Sentra SE-R. The cause was exactly as Daniel posted. Located in the passenger side footwell on that car as well. I paid $19.95 for the part at the Nissan dealer. Checked my 4th gen and the set-up is exactly the same. Takes all of five minutes to make the change yourself--very easy.

got my maxima fixed today

it cost me $40+tax in Canada for the part, but i heard that some dealerships charge $53!

well it was the right solution!

thanks Daniel B.!

Thanks alot,

I looked only briefly last night but wasn't sure what I was really looking for. Saw the blower motor and a large group of wires ( about fifty ) coming out of the blower with a good bit of electrical tape around them. Didn't have your reply in front of me so I failed to locate the resistor. I will go back today to see if I can spot the electrical connector on the air duct.

There is a good photo of the blower motor and resistor assembly in the Haynes repair manual, page 3-8. If you don't already have a copy of this book, please get one. It will be money well spent.

I had the same problem a few weeks ago on my 95 Max, but I did it myself because the Nissan dealer wanted to charge me $80 to $100 in LABOR to:
a) Move the front pass seat all the way back (for convenience)
b) Remove a harness connector (with 4 wires I think) running into the bottom of the blower motor.
c) Remove the 2 philips screws that hold the blower motor resistor in place.
d) Put new one in, reverse install.

Took me less than 3 minutes, damn the dealer and their exorbitant labor rate. It didn't even require any trim or glove box removal.

95pbGXE, tell me what you had to pay the dealer for the repair 'k?

95pbGXE Oct 10, 2001 12:19 PM

i paid $40 plus tax for the part. i had a friend put it in so no dealer charge for labour. all i know is that the dealer charges $53+ for the part

similar problem

i also have a problem with my manual air temperature control, however it involves the temperature selector. there does not seem to be any in between temperature. if the selector is on the "cool half" it is as cold as possible. if the selector is on the "hot half" the air is as hot as possible. sometimes i just want that warm air, not hot air. does this involve the same part? thank you for any help.

Part number on invoice is 27150-1E405. I simply asked for the fan speed resistor. $27.28 was my price. Installation is a no brainer.

I went to a junk yard and they wanted to charge me 50 bucks for it. Then I want to a locate dealership for one and they said 48 bucks. so I just did some soldering myself. And I put it back in. and now nothing is wrong! just hope my car doesn't catch on fire lol. bamabob where did u get ur's? where can I get cheap o.e.m parts?

bamabob Oct 11, 2001 05:09 AM

Nothing special going on here, just went into the local dealership here in Montgomery,AL , smiled :D , and asked them for the part. Guess they just gave a good price unlike most dealers.
