My tranny is getting rebuilt, and my mechanic called Nissan to get the bearing that needs to be replaced. He gave them the VIN # and was told that Nissan NA never sold a car with that VIN #... what the heck? He's thinking maybe it's a Canadian car or something. Strange huh... just thought I'd share.

Was your car stolen at one time or another? Mine was, and my VIN # changed. Nissan has a heck of a time when I bring it in for some service issues.

Your VIN should read like this:

J (made in Japan)
N1 (made by Nissan)
C (safety restraint type)
A21D (line, series, body style, engine type)
# (arbitrarily assigned check digit to verify accuracy of the VIN)
T (1996)
T (built at Oppama plant)
###### (your car's serial number)

Does it?

It's never been stolen since I've owned it. I just bought it 9 months ago. I'll have to check my registration against the vin stamped on the car, maybe thats what happened.

Well, if you still can't figure it out, you might want to try carfax.com and see if they can tell you its history. It will cost you a few dollars, but I think its worth it. BTW, how do you like your GC Coils? I was going to buy them but I am still indecided. Is it easy to raise/lower the car without putting on a rack? Can you go all the way down and still be able to raise it with just your hand? Thanks.

I believe TarHeelMax's information has a minor error. This is my interpretation of the 4Gen VIN ...

J (Country of manufacture, J = Japan)
N (Manufacturer identification, N = Nissan)
1 (Vehicle type, 1 = passenger vehicle)
C (Engine type = VQ30DE)
A (Vehicle line, A = Maxima)
2 (Model change)
1 (Body type = Sedan)
= (Restraint system: A = front and side air bags, D = front air bags only)
# (Check digit to verify accuracy of the VIN)
= (Model year: S = '95, T = '96, V = '97, W = '98, X = '99)
= (Manufacturing plant, T = Oppama, M = Tochigi)
###### (Vehicle serial number)
