Top Speed...I know it's dangerous, but....
...I gotta know. I got on the highway yestrday in the afternoon when traffic died down and gunned it. I have a 97 se auto with a K&N cone, Apex exhaust and a RT 2.5" cat. When the car was new, it hit 130mph no problem with no Mods! But AFTER the mods, it hit 120mph and was struggling to go over that!!! What's up with that?! Could it be the mileage (currently has 65K)? Let me know what you guys think...
|
I think you have other problems
I have a 95SE auto... 95000 miles... I have hit 125 and backed off with no problems...
|
Changed plugs? Fuel filter? Ever run less than 92 octane?
|
I hit 140 in my 97 GXE 5-speed. I have a CAI, oh yeah and almost 85k miles.

Re: Top Speed...I know it's dangerous, but....
I take it you've recently completed the 60K maintenance and replaced the spark plugs, among other things. The only other culprit it could be is Feul filter. Often neglected, not too much appreciated.

Re: Re: Re: Top Speed...I know it's dangerous, but....
Originally posted by Str8ridin Yup, the 60K service was done, hopefully all of it (it's amazing how much we trust our mechanics!). Ok, how much do you think the rims would play apart? I have 18X8's on 235/40's? I'll change out the fuel filter and see what happens....maybe wash my car to lower the drag coefficient! :D Rims do make a difference. Heavier rims sap horsepower. You may not feel it during normal driving, but I'm sure it makes a difference in high speed driving. 125 or 135...it's still FAST... |
Road beast
How ?? In a porche  ???
maxi's dont go that fast = drag = loss of hp up that high :redbounce |

i hit 126
not much of a problem, just took a while after 120 to get that extra 6, backed off cause i was running out of straight road. coulda done more.
got 107k and an intake. |
Here are some pics..
I hit 143 last Fall but the pic I took only shows 139. Of course that is what the speedo says so it may be way off..

Re: Heavy wheels
I have had my Maxima up to 143 on the autobahn. This speed was recorded on my GPS, versus the speedometer. Most speedometers tend to get inaccurate at high speeds. I think that mine was reading slightly higher, but it's hard to estimate since the speedo stops at 140 and I don't feel like looking at the speedometer driving that fast anyway!!! I don't believe I could have gotten too much more speed out of the car, although I still had several hundred RPM before redline (according to my passenger).

Re: Heavy wheels
Originally posted by Daniel B. Martin I respectfully disagree. Heavy wheels will affect acceleration but not top speed. |
Re: Re: Heavy wheels
Originally posted by NZ Max Yes, they are harder to spin up and slow down. Try this to see what I mean. Have a friend sit on an office chair with one of those gas lift things. Get him to sit with his arms folded and spin him. Simple. Now get him to hold his arms out and try to spin him. A bit harder? |

Maybe a good answer?
However, if the wheel/tire package's diameter is greater than stock, the speedometer might be off, but you can reach a higher top speed than that of an overall smaller wheel/tire package. The only trade off for the larger set-up is acceleration is slower.

I guarantee its the cone intake thats killing the top speed. My top speed with stock airbox: 138, with cone filter : 131.

Re: Re: Re: Heavy wheels
Originally posted by medicsonic Bigger rims take smaller profile tires, hence the radius hasn't changed. hense, when you want to drag race, you want smaller diameter rims=easier to accelerate |
AS Daniel B. Martin stated, the acceleration will change, the top speed shouldn't.

hey nz max
why does your purple max look so odd? its like an i-30 mixed with a maxima, body kti and wheels and then the outcome is your car..ive heard of cefiro before but never realy knew what it stood for..
|
I hit 132 last night fairly easy with my 98 and a jwt, but the freeway started to get rough so I slowed down fairly quickly... I was traveling 100 the entire trip and I hit 130 NP...
|
max speed
i was able to hit 130 no problem then let go.thats with 18"rims didnt make a difference.
|
What's the top speed in fourth gear at 6500 rpm?
|
Hey maximaracer28
the reason his car looks different to yours is probably cause the Maximas in NZ and Australia have a slightly different appearance to those in the states. (I live in australia and have an australian maxima) It does look more like the I30 you guys have over there.

Cefiro, (Japanese Maxima) = US I30 = New Zealand Maxima = Australian Maxima. Cefiro is what the Japenese call their maximas. They also had the best motors some of them. VQ25DD or VQ30DD yes you are probably wondering what the DD stands for. D = doch like on standard vq's. The other D stands for direct injection into the combustion chamber. A Vq25dd has 210hp stock Vs a vq25de which is 160 I don't know what the vq30dd produces but i gues 240hp? These were very few and far between. |

Originally posted by Nealoc187 I'm guessing 220hp, since thats what RoadBeast has stock. Im assuming he gets his extra power the same way the NZ maximas do, with the DD instead of DE. |

Maybe you are gonna say that I'm lying and I will have to prove it again as I did :) How do you illustrate speeds in excess of 150mph accurately using the stock guages on a 1999 Nissan Maxima? I ask this not to discount the possibility of your claimed #'s - I just think that aside from a GPS or radar/laser reading, speeds in excess of 100 mph are difficult to measure accurately using a non-calibrated speedometer. fwiw. . . Btw, on a deserted highway at 3AM, I was able to get my bone-stock 1995 Maxima SE 5-speed up to just over an "indicated" 140mph at one point and it was still pulling with room to redline. I ran out of straight road & had to back off - felt pretty confident I could have added another 10mph with a long enough runout. What an engine! This thing stomps! I can only imagine the latest gen. engine is a stump-puller! Anyway, good luck in your quest for verifiable #'s! (The only ones that matter) |

anyway.. you guys shouldn't be driving that fast.. its against the law and you have no moral respect for other people on the road.. you should all have your license taken away and sent straight to jail.. anyone who does over 70 mph is a fvcking moron...
yes morons!!!!!!!!!!! :D http://64.252.159.123/~doug/speedo.jpg |

Originally posted by NZ Max I see what you mean but Im talking about where the weight is positioned relative to the axis of rotation. If the weight is further out, it moves more distance per revolution compared with weight thats closer to the centre. POP Charger decreases top speed??
What's this?? How can that be? I assume when you guys mention cone intake you're talking about the POP charger. With all the dynos we've seen you would think that the POP charger would make the top speed better. Can someone explain this?
I have a CAI and before I got my Y pipe, I would feel a lull from 120 to 140 mph. I would still get there, but not as quickly as when i was stock. I guess because when I was stock, the torque was very linear. Now, the CAI torque curve does not feel as linear. The torque is bigger than stock, but not as linear. Now that I have the Y pipe, The rush is steady right up to 140. It seems that the lull was also affected by exhaust restriction, resulting in a somewhat flatter torque curve. DW |
