Best thing I've done to increase low end power EVER

I just fixed this huge leak I had in my Y-Pipe. My car is amazingly quieter too, but I kinda liked the sound when it had the leak.

mtrai760 Oct 4, 2001 01:58 PM

Where was it leaking from?

Sprint Oct 4, 2001 02:01 PM

when my flex section was blown.. the car had no power till 5000 rpms.. it ****ed me off

BrianV Oct 4, 2001 02:12 PM

Although my flex has what looks like tears in that mesh it's not leaking there. It was on the welds right before the flex portion. The one that comes down from the rear bank where it meets with the front , and then one other weld on the main pipe.

Just out of curiosity, how can you tell if you have a leak in your y-pipe? Loss of power, noise level???

Sprint what kind of y-pipe was it. I have a Cattman y-pipe right now and its got a hole in the flex section. My car is loud as hell. Does the hole do anything to the performance of the car??

BRIGBOY Oct 4, 2001 03:35 PM

Guess what!

I ordered my budget Y on monday and its here already! Looks really nice too. Can't wait to put it on.

BrianV Oct 4, 2001 04:00 PM

You can tell purely by the noise, the car like gurgles.

Canuck Oct 4, 2001 04:05 PM

I think I will have to check mine, as it has a ton of hiss

BrianV Oct 5, 2001 12:40 AM

yeah let us know

i had the warspeed y pipe.. the hole kills low end torque.. but gives you better high end torque i.e. high speeds

Sprint Oct 5, 2001 06:58 AM

hiss = non lined flex section = no loss in performance
car sounding like a big block v8 , no low end torque and you can hear when you shift = blow flex section = loss in low end torque, increase in high end torque

breaux124 Oct 5, 2001 07:33 AM

My leaking flex section made my car sound like a weed wacker.
It reminded me of the old style beetles. It sounded like crap.

Fix the flex section and you'll be much happier.

Canuck Oct 5, 2001 09:13 AM

The only good thing about the hiss, is that a lot of people think I am boosting.

Hmm.. i think mine is leaking. At start up.. listening to the exhaust.. it kinda goes .. "put...put...put" but after its warm, it stops. Im guessing its the metal expanding due to heat & closes off teh hole. Also... during acceleration.. there is a vibration coming from teh floor board under me. The Y also makes is another funny noise. Sonds like a honda exhaust. BTW, teh rest of my exhaust is stock. Any ideas?

The vibration from the floor could be from the bracket banging. Is the bracket with the rubber hangers (at the cat/Y-pipe junction) near the frame of the car?
You should be able to just bend the metal that is hitting the car.

Which Y-pipe do you have?

SuDZ Oct 5, 2001 01:41 PM

How you guys getting holes in your flex sections? Just wear and tear or you hit something?

Mine came with the leak.
I believe that the batch of Y-pipes that was sold, all the flex sections had leaks in them.

oh yeah? i thought my motor mounts were weak.. damn damn damn

BrianV Oct 5, 2001 08:39 PM

Hey guys it seems my car revs faster, smoother up top tpp, are you sure that leaky ypipes yield more power up top? I would think that would cause confusion and disruption in the flow

SillePimp Oct 6, 2001 02:27 AM

I think I've got a hole in my WSP SS y-pipe. Although, I've got header wrap around the flex section, I should get the retrofit item from WSP to get rid of the hissing crap. May be the hole explains why I've got no low-end.

BrianV Oct 6, 2001 02:37 AM

My low end (sub 3000) is like night and day diff, I bet I'm putting down like 20-30 more down there.

I have teh stillen Y. The new 2 piece design. The vibration only is there when im around 2k-2.2k rps. Or when im in 4th gear (under 2k rpms-2k rpms).
