weird clacking noise coming from the front driver's side

I been noticing this weird clacking noise coming from the front left side. The noise only is there when I am driving around 5 mph. The noise more like a clack clack clack then as I go faster it would go away. I would also be on the hill parked upwards then I would put the car in D and drive off the clacking is there untill I pick up more speed then it gets quiet. I am thinking it's my drive shafts or cv shafts. anyone. Thanks.

I have the exact same rattle in my 96 GLE, it's pissing me off. let me know if you figure out what it is.

I look around and found this... doubtful that this is the cause but it's always possible.

Clack clack clack it typically CV joint. Go to a parking lot, turn the wheel to the right and accelerate. If you get a clack clack clack.....

I've also heard if you can just turn the steering wheel in either direction you could also hear the clicking noise that means it's the cv joints vs the clacking I am defently sure that it's the cv shaft but it's to hard to know what it clearly is.

I have the same ticking problem, I don't have a clue what it may be. I saw that my outer cv boot has a slight tear in it but not sure if that is causing the prob.

From what I heard is that if you have a slight tear in the boots you should get it replaced immediatly. If not the axle can go bad cause all of the grease can leak out of there. and your axle will be bone dry.

If my lug nut's were loose I believe I would of have had the car fall out while I am driving at high speeds or at turns or the threads stripping.

def cv joints, also try turning your steering far right or far left and reverse slowly.

JtzMax Sep 22, 2007 08:03 AM

could also be a tie rod end or ball joint too

did you check the lugs .... ??? They may not fall off ya know. I did my brakes a while back and forgot to tighten them up ... snugged em before I dropped the car back down, drove out to a mates house (45 min's away) and on the way home I remembered that I didn't tighten them all the way. Made a slight clicking noise and that is what made me remember.

Also ... to check CV joints, you need to be moving, not just crank the wheel. If it's CVs, you may also feel it "jerk" at take off or let off of the throtle.

I always make sure that the lugnut's are tight and I always work my way around the vehicle so I have tighten them all out. I checked out the ball joints and the whole suspension I believe everything is rusting out but not to much. I also feel a slight viberation on the tie rods I am not sure if your supposed to feel them or not when I have the car on the jack.
