Spark Plug in Oil

Hey guys, earlier today I was changing my spark plugs. I did the front 3 and everything was fine. Then when I got to the back right one something was wrong. The coil pack was covered in oil. Then I looked into the hole and the hole was covered in oil. Any ideas on what is wrong, or what need to be replaced? Also, since this is full of oil does that mean my car has only 5 function cylinders?

I believe there is a rubber seal between the valve cover and the spark plug tube. If you remove the valve cover you'll see the seal. These seals went bad on my wife's eclipse and it was a relatively easy fix.

The spark plug tube came loose letting the oil in, IMO.

My 96 did this, back side far right from front (driver side). You have to remove the valve cover to get a new one back in. I changed out my knock sensor and injectors while i was at it!

The back side is PIA. Have to remove the intake to get to the cover.

spark plug tube seals are bad.. they need to be replaced along with the rear valve cover gasket...

I had this same problem on my rear left and right cilinders, but didnt realize untill after i began changing my spark plugs, and removed the coil pack intern covering the spark plug with oil. Since i had to pick up the parts ie: the seals and gasket. I needed the car to operate on all 6 cilinders. I had to dry the spark plug tubes that were filed with oil, using heavy duty paper towel wraped around a screwdriver. I never removed the spark plugs untill the chamber was dry fearing that an oil leeking in would damage the engen. I made shure that the tube was dry enough allowing me to reinstall the spark plug coil packs, which I also cleaned. This was only temperary and it definetly took quit a few min to do but it allowed me to use the car after noticing the seals were broken qand my spark plugs were soked

Hi.
I did the job 5 times in 96' infiniti i30. I will take 2~3 hours unless you have an experience. But it isn't hard job.

What you need.
1. new spark plug tube seals whose OEM part number is 13276-31U21 for back side.
2. new valve cover gasket for that side.
3. RTV silicon for the valve cover.
4. utility knife to remove the old seal.
5. Throttle body cleaner to clean the coil pack and spark plugs.
6. shop towels.

You will have to remove the intake manifold collector to take the valve cover out. That mean you should get rid of air intake assy, throttle body, IAVC. So if you have time, you had better to clean the T/B and IAVC. It will not take a long time but it is worth.
DO NOT WORRY ABOUT THE OIL INSIDE THE SPARK PLUG WELLS because after the tube seals are replaed, the oil will be burned automately. Just clean the spark plugs and coils carfully. You will need to take a picture for the old seal to make easy assembly.

Thanks a lot guys of all the input it is appreciated. I'll probably do it next weekend. With this problem does this mean that I am only running on 5 cylinders?

No you would have noticed. Just make sure there is a good cleen connection between the coil and the plug. Clean out the oil with a towel if you'r not sure.

My car was two spark plugs in the oil but I didn't notice at all.
Even I drove 2k miles from Michgan to NewYork and return.
Gas mileage wasn't bad. Do not be worry about it too much.
Just do it when you have time.

OMG another car with spark plugs in the oil? You'd think the oil filter would stop these things from gettin in ur oil....

With my maxima's current condition does this mean that I am loosing horsepower?

No. I guess the only issue is if the oil shorts out the tip, which is unlikely. I am sure mine had been that way for a while. Not sure what the real down side is other than messy plug replacements and possibly fouling new ones. I did what dblock1 did, soaked up as much as I could before removing the plug.

I did change the oil at the same time, don't want those old plugs clogging up my filter!

I have this problem. Any update?

I have the rear one, closest to throttle body soaked. The coil is drenched in oil. As a result, the car misfires as 1 cyndliner can't even ignite.

So a valve cover set should do the job eh. Is it doable with typical wrenches and what not? And are gasket glues necessary?

see post #6. You need the upper intake gasket, the rear valve cover gasket, and RTV for the far passenger side of the valve cover, and 3 new spark tube seals. Pop the old ones out, press the new ones in. If you get Haynes manual, it tells you how to do it. Simple, just time consuming. You can remove the upper intake/TB as an assymbly. Just disconnect all the hoses and electrical connectors.
