Stay away from XTR clutch kits!!!

edit: It seems that I was mistaken about what caused my damage. My tranny had a diff failure, and the ebay clutch kit had little or nothing to do with it.

I bought this clutch off of ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...167452759&rd=1

Today I parked and came back to a few quarts of fluid on the ground under my car. I pulled it into my shop and saw that it was leaking from between the engine and bellhousing. So I dropped the tranny, which was very annoying since I just the the cluth in last weekend, and I see that there is a hole in the tranny housing where the pressure plate was rubbing against the transmission. I just put some Redline MT90 in too. Ebay cluth kits ftmfl. I guess its time for a LSD tranny since I have to buy one anyway.

Wow that sucks man, sorry to hear that. I'll give you $50 for your input shaft if it helps at all, saves me the trouble of speedi-sleeving one that I have.

TunerMaxima3000 11-03-2007 09:10 PM

.. how was the pressure plate rubbing against the transmission? Im confuzzled

Slickismax 11-03-2007 09:17 PM

$50.00 for the input shaft sound good. Just let me wait until I get a new tranny before I start stripping this one. Also, how do I get it out? Do I just have to crack the case open?

The pressure plate had a square top. My old one (clutchmasters) had a round top. I guess that little bit of difference didn't clear the tranny. I'll post some pics on Monday when I'm back at my shop.

Have fun finding a tranny man. I just had to get one and took me a week of calling and emailing to find a lsd tranny.

TunerMaxima3000 11-03-2007 09:23 PM

yeah I want to see this ,, weird. Yah you have to bust she 'ol trans open to get the Imput shaft out.

Slickismax 11-03-2007 09:44 PM

You know, there are only three possibilities. One, the pressure plate was too tall/wide, and it was indeed rubbing against the tranny housing. Two, I didn't replace the throw out bearing, but the old one was definitely big enough to cover all of the springs on the new pressure plate, and it was fine when I dropped the tranny again. or Three, something happened internally, and the housing was broken from the inside out. But there are a lot of scrapes on the inside around and next to the holes.

The pics are actually pretty interesting. The holes are in odd places. After I'm done I'm going to pull it open and see if everything is fine internally. I've replaced probably close to 40 clutches over the years on different cars, so I'm a decent home mechanic.

good to know about those clutches. I will def. not order, but I'm in for the pictures.
I need a clutch and have been recommended this one

Any one have any experience with that seller?
I was told that the clutch was a great price (that's true so far), but I sorta question it's authenticity because it's so cheap. the group buy price on the .org is double that list on ebay.
weird.
sorry to jack your thread.

for the ones that arent boosted and are sticking with n/a you can purchase a 5th gen clutch kit for around 200 from the dealer with everything and it does the job and its reliable.

sharkulator 11-04-2007 05:08 PM

I learned a long time ago to stay away from ebay cheap knock offs.

96max_manSE 11-04-2007 05:10 PM

thats the truth!

JSutter 11-04-2007 07:32 PM

Sometimes you need to spend money on certain parts. Skimping on a clutch is not the way to go. I would never use anything but OEM. Unless I was boosted, but I wouldnt buy off ebay for a clutch. I have seen/felt/installed too much junk, even from "top" aftermarket names.

Slickismax 11-05-2007 08:10 AM

I know I shouldn't have bought a clutch on ebay, but I figured I would give it a try. Turns out it wasn't such a good way to save money.

That's a front diff failure bud. That is not a clutch failure.

Really. Well, then I guess I will rescind my previous statement about the clutch kit. Either way, I'm not going to buy another one on ebay.
