radiator fans ??

hi
i have a 96 maxiam gxe and i just installed new fans and i was cheking them to see how they work and they don't start the tempeture goes to the midle and they won't do anything also i would like to know which ones are the relays so i can checked them out maybe they don't work, let me know if someone knows.
thanks

IIRC they dont come on unless the coolant temp reaches 205+.

jav24 12-05-2007 05:14 PM

205+ is 3/4 of the temperature ? also im missing 2 blue relays located infront of the batterie they were broken in an accident the car had, are those relays for the radiator fan ?

Nopike 12-05-2007 05:41 PM

My 98 has relay box in front of battery, two relays are for cooling fans. The top row most left relay and bottom row second from the left are for the fans.

If it has a cover it would indicate which relays are for which functions. If it as cold by you as it is here in Chicago you probably will have a hard time getting the fans to turn on.

jav24 12-05-2007 05:56 PM

its not that cold in here its about 72 F and the relay don't have a cover so thats why i don't know also the 2 blue relays that im missing come from the second line, assuming the first line is the one close to the batterie

Nopike 12-05-2007 06:13 PM

What I call the top row is the one closer to the battery.

There are actually three cooling fan relays. The setup is: top row left to right 1) cooling fan #3. 2) Inhibitor relay 3) ASCD relay. Bottom row left to right 1) ECS Relay 2) Cooling fan #2. 3) Horn. 4) Cooling fan #1

72F Nice, It's like 10F here, it will be 72F again in about 3 months :(

ok so im missing #4 and #1 from second row

No, the gauge is designed to always stay in the middle regardless of temp fluctuations from the different fan modes.

The gauge is 'in the middle' from 160*F - 210*F. Anywhere above or below, the needle will climb.

is there any way i can see turn on the fans just to see if the fans are working, out here is 56 F so it will take alot of time to turn on by the temperature, so if i turn the a/c on will the fan turn on ??

clive 12-10-2007 01:19 PM

yes, if you turn on the AC the fans should start.

Only 1 fan will cut on when the a/c is on, which is the one closest to the passenger side. The right one, or the one closet to driver side comes on to help cool down when the temp reaches 205 or somewhere close.

jav24 12-10-2007 01:58 PM

i turn on the a/c and the fan won't start do you guys think its because im missing relay #1 and # 4 from second row assuming that 1st row is next to batterie?

Nopike 12-10-2007 06:01 PM

So you are missing #1) ECS Relay #4) Cooling fan #1 ? I'm not sure what ECS relay is for.

Yes you have to #4 (Cooling fan #1) installed for the fans to work. This is a blue relay. You can borrow one from your other relay box near the washer fluid tank for testing purposes.

There are 3-4 different type of relays blue, black, brown. You can move these and only the proper relay will fit ito the socket, it will not allow you to install the wrong one. You can use the horn, fog lamp or defroster relays temporarily to test your fan circuit.

jav24 12-10-2007 06:05 PM

i believe the 3rd one from the second row is the horn and is not blue its gray so that won't work to put it on #4 is there another one i can borrow from my other relays that are not too important ??

Nopike 12-10-2007 06:21 PM

You can borrow one from your other relay box near the washer fluid tank. There are many in there that you can use for testing.

This should help
