$650.00 for a used transmission!!!

$650.00 for a used transmission!!!
reason being is that it only has 66,000 original miles on it and the guys giving me a 90 day warranty. add the 500 to install plus tax and i'm looking at about 1,200.00. yes, i could and might go for a higher mileage trans, but its only $100.00 cheaper but same warranty. any thoughts??? price seems right to me considering a re-build is almost 2,000.00!!!

Just saying, it was cheaper than used transmissions for me, and it might be cheaper for you as well if you live around the East coast. Plus you get all new bearings that are properly shimmed, etc...

i appreciate the feedback, maybe you could give me a link to his website or pm him for me?? i've used the salvage yard b4 for a used tranny, and they are reliable. but, i would like a properly rebuilt trans, and to save $$$$$. thanks>>> and i live in pa.

$650 is pretty typical perhaps a little on the low side for a junkyard transmission. they are still really expensive for some reason. $2000 is insane for a rebuild. it's not that hard.

Damn you got to put it in yourself some how I can never spend 500 for something you can do yourself unless you got the money to blow. There are so many writeups on taking it out and putting it back in I am sure you could figure it out

If it's an auto tranny, just use the lower mileage junkyard tranny. They're pretty reliable.
Junkyard 5 speed trannys are overpriced because in Maximas they often wears out early. 66k, 80k, both could be in need of a rebuild. Or the 66k one could be worse than the 80k one. It's enough of a problem that mileage tells you very little about condition. If you buy a junkyard tranny, take it to a tranny shop and pay $100 to have them open it and inspect the bearings. If it's good, install it. If it's not, return it or renegotiate the price you paid and get it rebuilt.
Yes, if you're not doing the labor this is not a cheap job. So that 'warranty' is very expensive to you to honor - there is little point in installing it to find out if it works. Which is why if it's a 5 speed I recommend having a shop open it up for an inspection first.

auto trans, and i don't think 1200.00 for that is a bad price. mine seems to be pretty tight still, i will probably wait until early next year to do it cause i got other $hit to deal with thats more pressing for me to spend my money on. and jacobmh, your insane dude, i would never even attempt a rebuild i have no clue how to work on transmissions or the tools or a garage or a lift.....

how much does a rebuild kit cost? do you just call a dealer and tell them you need a rebuild kit for a 199* maxima? I have a couple trannys, one is decent enough to put on a car and the other is in need of a rebuild.
