more starting issues. I can't believe this.

2nd auto zone starter installed in 3 weeks. the second one acted nice for one week, and now its making all sorts of grinding noises every 3 starts or so. Im freaking p!ssed. I would have to have to worst luck in the world to get two bad starters, (from two different autozones) the only thing i can imagine at this point is that the new one is an 11 tooth design. I could have sworn that my OEM one was 8 tooth, or was it 10 tooth? I cant check because i gave it back my old OEM one for the core charge. Does anybody know how many teeth are in a 4th gen (99) starter? Im thinking the more teeth there are the more room for error in the spacing? All i know is that I my old starter never gave any horrible noises, and just died quietly. Im at a loss. IM gonna go searching for a used OEM one tommorow. funk this sh!t.

00 and 01's will work too...

you should have bought the lifetime warranty on those autozone starters...then who cares how many you go through.

hmmm... same here... i replaced the starter 4 months ago... stock was 8 gear... the rebuilt one i got had 10 gears... died in 4 1/2 month i got a used one from a yard (bak to original 8 gears 1995 model)... worked for 2 days... i've been getting a crank position sensor code 0407 for some time now... this morning i jumped the starter, the car started and i left it on for some time... turned it off n jumped the starter again n now all i hear n c is sparks showin power at the starter... the starter spinning noise showing the starter is turning... but no engine turning... this starting issue had become a pain in the ***... well... atleast i'm not the only one :)

i'd say you need to take care of that CKPS

got a used one from a second hand auto parts place locally. OEM of course. 60 bucks. Everything works like it should again. we will see how long it works for. Im sure the guy will do right by me if it should crap out very soon. And btw the AZ starter does not need a purchased lifetime warranty, it comes with it- but its a POS part. the teeth, even judging an 8 tooth to 8 tooth are not spaced corrrectly. It was gonna mess up my flywheel if I kept it in there. They took back the AZ starter and gave me my money back. Screw the AZ starter. At least it was there for the emergency i needed it for in the first place. OEM for me, all day every day from this point forward. at least with starters.

Damn, what do you know I am having the same problem as you for the past 2 days. The starter makes these grinding noises before it starts, but it takes about 3 seconds to do so. And, yes This is a POS Autozone one I bought. After hearing this, I am returning it and going OEM. However, after the hard start today, It pulled a code on me. Anyone have any idea what that could be? I hope I didnt f*ck up my flywheel.

why would you ever buy used starter ? rebuilt maybe, new maybe but used ?

get the updated 11 tooth and you'll be fine for a long time to come. and try putting an xtra ground wire on one of the starter's mounting bolts to the chassis

andrei- the used one is 11 tooth. I know about the whole used part thing. But I paid 60 bucks for it and the guy wont screw me over. He is a nice guy. I made a new contact at least for auto parts.

On the bright side your paint looks gorgeous for a 4th gen. I only saw one in that color and the paint was extremely faded.

Zaino and a PC for the Win. HAving a garage helps alot too. Thanks for the compliment. YOu should see my interior. It's gonna be very hard to let go of my 4th gen when the time comes.

um try getting it from Chief's or NAPA...if you have one. I never found a started that even fit my old celica from Autozone even tho they told me it was the right one, it was oriented wrong to begin with.

Used ones are better than rebuilt any day! I love my 2001 starter. :D

The updated OEMs that Nissan offer are freaking fantastic. I'll put it in mine if my AZ one ever craps out, but I grounded it on install (naturally) and haven't had problems with it for over a year...*hint* they don't typically last as long as this, but it's kind of like the goldfish I got from the fair that lived for 7 years...
