Oxygen Sensor simulator Questions.
 

Hello 4th Gen Orgers,

A friend of mine has a 4th Gen 1997 maxima. He just ordered an O2 simulator from http://www.o2simulator.com/

My question is, how many O2 simulators does the 4th gen 1997 have and how many need to be simulated in order to show no codes for the cats. I am assuming that all 4th Gens are federal emissions unlike the 5th gens that have cali (4 oxygen sensors) and federal (2 oxygen sensors).

How do I know which sensor is the one that goes into the Cat?

It was so much easier on the 5th Gen, lol.

That question confuses me.

You look at the cat, there's the O2.

BTW, Fed spec has 3 O2 sensors, Cali spec has 4. Determine which yours is, first.

Thanks for the response. Hes coming tomorrow and needs it done ASAP and I promised that I would help so I figured I would ask all the questions now so I can determine what to do on the spot.

On the 5th gen cali maxima by the radiator, if i recall correctly, the first 2 (from the left) are y-pipe and precat sensors. the other 2 are after precat and cat. I am asking if the schematic is the same for the 4th gens. I dont want to wire the wrong sensors up.

I found this information for the 98's, can anyone confirm if this is true about the 97's?

Should be, I'd imagine. You can get an FSM at vq35de.com/ESM and check out the wiring diagram to be sure.

If it's Fed spec, you can't access the downstream O2 sensor harness from the engine bay, you'd have to get to it from under the car or from inside. The harness runs through a grommet into the interior of the car right by the cat.

I am looking at the diagrams and I am confused. Not sure which bank refers to which sensor. I will look tomorrow maybe it will all make sense. THanks so much for your help.

This is what I found in the manual:

As I understand it, red black wire is power.
White is input.
Red is heat
Black is ground.

The front heated oxygen sensors do not apply for emissions, just the rears I assume.

No the first 2 are vital for emissions as well as performance tthe rear 02 is designed for making sure the catalytic converter is doing its job

95-98 cali spec & fed spec still only have 3 o2's, it's the '99 cali specs that got four. They also switched over to a 4-wire postcat for all '97/98

red black wire is power.
White is input.
Red is heat
Black is ground.
