Best off the rack stock B pipe and muffler?

Hey everyone,
So what is the best off the rack stock exhaust system to buy? I need the B- pipe section and the muffler (it is only two pieces right?) for my 1996. I want a stock system that will not be loud. I have the Budget Y pipe on order, and I want to go pick up the remainder of the exhaust today, so that next weekend I can swap the entire thing. I also would like to keep the price as low as possible. Should I just go down to NAPA and get the exhaust pieces, or get Bosal parts? Any feedback? I also want 100% bolt up, no mods or welding. And I will be keeping the stock cat.

Thanks,
Zack

PS: I did check the exhaust sticky, but it does not say much about stock systems.

Bosal = ballsweat odor. See if a muffler shop can mandrel bend you one. Theres also a Greddy SP2 in the for sale section which is relatively quiet and it will throw you a couple of ponies.

Tatanko 04-05-2008 09:07 AM

GReddy SP2 quiet? Are you insane? Relative to what, open headers? :squint:

ball sweat order? I don't get it? A custom bent system is more than I want to spend. I am just wondering who has had good luck with various off the shelf exhaust parts.

a custom built system is usually a cost effective solution vs. a pre-manufactured cat back system.

what it sounds like you want to do is buy pipes and bends and piece together a system, which as not as easy as (it sounds like) you think.

No all I want is a bone stock cat back system. Nothing fancy or otherwise! I am just wondering who sells the best off the shelf system. I guess NAPA would be fine? At Napa for the B pipe and muffler section, they want $313 and also at Napa for the Bosal system they want $323.

Thanks,
Zack

Zack,

If you want a bone stock cat back system, then go to the Nissan dealership to get a stock b-pipe and exhaust. Otherwise, find the nearest muffler shop. Any aftermarket exhaust you get will not be quiet. That's the point of an aftermarket exhaust.

I just put a Walker system in from the cat back. I have a warpspeed Y pipe, stock cat, Walker B-pipe and Walker Quiet Flow muffler. The car sounds perfectly fine.
The B-pipe was a bit expensive being I have a california spec car. Other then that, it wasn't bad, Warrantied for life!

Did you just pick the parts up at the local auto parts shop?

From the dealer the two parts are VERY expensive.

i would look into getting an aftermarket b pipe (cattman, budget, etc.) and an oem style muffler if noise is a concern.

since you bought a y-pipe i'm assuming you are looking for some hp. a mandrel bent b-pipe will give you a couple more ponies compared to a crush bent oem replacment your likely to find at the local auto store.

I know. What you want does not exist. There is no such thing as an off the rack stock exhaust system other than the one at the dealership. What I am trying to say is that any aftermarket exhaust part you get will be louder than what came original with the car. Budget Y-Pipes are larger in diameter than a stock one which creates better air flow, but that also means it makes the car sound a little louder. If you want a "quiet" exhaust system, you can put on a silencer at the end of the aftermarket muffler, but that still restricts air flow and makes a stupid exhaust sound.

hot_wax_tree 04-05-2008 02:54 PM

get the monza one that is up on ebay every once in a while. It is black and I've seen a few people with them. I dont know how loud they are but you could try putting a 5th gen muffler on the end for a couple ponies but still quiet. they sell for like 240.

NmexMAX 04-05-2008 03:08 PM

Cattman b pipe & 5th gen rear section.

MaxGordon7 04-05-2008 05:05 PM

anything that is 2.25 in size will work fine to keep the noise down.

QNO_A32 04-05-2008 05:46 PM

damn you i was going to tell him just do a custom bent 2.5" b pipe and a factory 5th gen muffler.should run under $200 no doubt. so i guess what nmexmax said +2 lol..........

Snypa 04-05-2008 07:44 PM

SP2

Tatanko 04-05-2008 10:12 PM

For the love of god people, the SP2 is NOT quiet. If you think that you have hearing issues.

Actually, my local auto parts store delivered them to me. :D
The muffler was in stock, the B-Pipe took 2 days to get because of my california emissions.

+1 on the Walker Quiet Flow muffler, but I have mine paired up w/ a Magnaflow resonator...not too loud nor quiet...:D

Got the Walker Quietflow
@ Rockauto for $62.79 - $50. rebate = $12.79 + shipping.

Tatanko 04-10-2008 01:13 PM

I love RockAuto. I got OEM-grade replacement brake pads for like $20 shipped for all 4 brakes.

IlyaK 04-11-2008 06:13 AM

I have SS AutoChrome Headers, Fed Spec OEM Y-Pipe (I'm originally a Cali-Spec), Magnaflow High-Flow Cat, Budget B-Pipe, and OEM 4th Gen Muffler (Ebay). My car sounds slightly more throaty than stock and when you WOT you can hear it nicely. It's not ricey or obnoxiously loud.

Just got one also. I can't go wrong with the price! The rebate form is located at walkerexhaust.com. If you want one from Rockauto, there is only a few left at $62.79.
The main reason I got the muffler is because of the internal flow & design. I got an actual diagram of the muffler email to me from Tenneco last August. If someone is willing to post it, I can email it to him/her.
Cheers.

:sprint:

That's where I ordered my OEM-grade exahust from last year and had a muffler shop install the parts, been happy with the replacement since :)

this thread is 16 months old!

JSutter 08-21-2009 02:42 PM

N00bs. Old threads..... the correct answer is Stillen. Seriously, its the best off the shelf B pipe. Its mandrel bent, straight through, light weight, priced cheap, well built, fits all 4th gens so no wondering what your emissions is, does not hang down like others, and is a direct replacement.

For muffler OEM style is the way to go. Id rather have OEM. The aftermarket OEM styles are ok, but built like crap. 5th gen muffs are where its at.
