A/C System PAG Oil Viscosity
 

I'm topping up the R134a in my 96 GLE as it looses some in the winter, and I'm not in the mood to change all the seals and evacuate the system just yet.

In past years I have been buying oil charges that come in cylinders with the R134a, but I never knew exactly what the Field manual's 'Oil Type S' translated into PAG rating.

This thread has some confusion as to whether it is PAG46 or PAG100:

if I have the Calsonic compressor, then I should use PAG46. I'm not in the mood to drop the compressor to find out.

From changing my alternator (had to drop the compressor then), and the pictures on this A/C compressor parts list, I have a Calsonic:

It's hard to find PAG46 I think, so when the shop recharged mine I think they used PAG100.

KLH00-PAGS0 is the part number if that helps any.

You should only add oil if you replace a component, not when you simply add refrigerant.

Thanks for the info. Yeah I was wondering if oil escapes if refrigerant leaks.
I had the Nissan part number, but that is a container of pure oil and only useful if the system has been taken apart and you are filling the compressor.

You need to know the PAG number when you use a container of R134a that has the oil mixed in with it (it is a small gas container) such that you can put it into a system that has not been taken apart and evacuated. Advanced Auto Part Stores carry these in stock at the stores.

So far, I'm assuming PAG46 is correct. Other articles point out that PAG100 is not a good substitute for PAG46. PAG oils do not have a universal one-fits-all type.

They all seem to coincide in that the ZXL 100 PG oil recommendation (from the label in the compressor), Nissan Part No. KLH00-PAGS0 is an ISO 46 oil.
