I thought there are two types of compressors for 4th gen maximas. Can anyone confirm what JtzMax ^ said is true?

There are different types, yes. The electrical hookup, AC lines, and mounting pattern should be all the same, however. The AC compressor you have supercedes to two different part numbers, both listed as 95/96 only.

1996

1998

Electrically, the connectors and wiring are the same.

Shouldn't be a problem, I'd imagine.

Get a pic of it, then maybe we can have fanaticrockford (or anyone with a '98 compressor out of the car) take a pic of his/theirs, and compare from there (to make sure).

You need a compressor from a car with a production date from 7/97 or later.

The older ones will bolt to the block, electrical connection is the same, but the High & Low side hose connections are different size.

I can confirm this. My A/C compressor was making noise, and it was replaced with a 96 one. The compressor is in there but the hoses are different size and therefore dont fit. The person said getting the lines from the 96 would fix my problem, but this was fall of last year so I didnt have to worry about it. Now that summer is coming again I may need that fixed. I will let ya know if I get mine fully fixed. But yes a 96 will fit a 98, but the lines wont. I was just happy to get rid of the noise, so I didnt care if the A/C actually worked or not.

I had two 96 maximas and they each had different AC line hook ups on the compressor. Were not interchangeable.

Yeah I agree with dave. I've replaced my compressor in my 95. Odered the wrong compressor at first...one for a 97-99. Compressor looks the same but the ac lines are different sizes...so the holes in the compressor are different sizes. Thats the only difference. We had to send it back and get the correct one. Just trying to save you some trouble that I wish I could've avoided.

as a matter of fact...I believe I still have the 97-99 compressor in storage now that I think about it. It's refurbished...bought it that way off of ebay. I have a 95 refurbished I got from the same seller and it works great. Not trying to thread jack but if you need a compressor for a 98 I'm sure this will work.

The 95-97 A/C system is different then the 98-99 system.

The 98 -99 system uses a variable pressure valve inside the compressor to regulate the system pressure as temps vary. The compressors on 98-99 4th gens don't cycle on and off because of this, they run continuously.

The 95-97 system cycles the compressors to maintain system pressures.

The two are not interchangable, hance the reason why the connections don't match.

In answer to your question, the 95-97 compressor will not work in 98-99 cars.
You need the correct compressor so your system functions correctly.
