Retrofit Projectors

I'm looking at picking up some 6k bulbs and ballasts from the classifieds, getting some ebay 1 piece headlights and retrofitting them.

Would these projectors work?

What else would I need?

do you guys reccomend certain projectors?

thanks

TSX projectors are great. I would register to hidplanet.com/forums and ask any headlight/projector questions there.

mtrai760 06-30-2008 07:13 AM

TSX or S2K projectors FTW!

imports_only1 06-30-2008 08:19 AM

Those TSX projectors are good but not the best. They're also single xenon, which means you'll lose your highbeams if you use your stock headlights. However, if you're getting those ebay headlights, I'm sure it'll have its own separate highbeams so TSX is good. For bixenons, I recommend these: TL, FX, Porches bixenons, RS6, E46 bixenons, valeo bixenons. TSX projectors are relatively small so the retrofit should be easy. 4 most important things you'll need to start a retro is 2 ballasts, 2 bulbs, 2 projectors, and 2 headlights. The rest....shrouds, bezels, etc....is up to you because they're more for looks. Other than that, you'll need the right tools such as a dremel tool, jb weld, rtv silicon sealant, nuts and bolts, and lastly, some patience. Refer to this DIY. Good luck.

Like Imports only said, you will lose the high beam function.
But in my case, i just aimed my TSX projectors a tad bit higher and i have no urge to click my stalk for a high beam.

The only thing with aiming it higher, is that it bothers oncoming traffic. i plan on doing the retro again with the R34 and utilize the inner portion for a high beam.

Crusher103 06-30-2008 08:47 AM

without high beams u will fail inspection, so u might want to look for Bixenons unless u plan on doing dual projectors one high and the TSX will be ur lows

TL, or FX will be ur best bet they are cheap and have good output.

TL projectors FTW. :)

Just don't try to put the TL's into the R34 housings, the projectors are too big to do so without a lot of extra work.

TL's arent cheap but they are the best bixenon out there. The fx is a so so projector and the high beam sucks. The Murano is a great projector but is a tad wide.

The Wizard 06-30-2008 10:01 AM

<-- S2K's in R34's user. High beams intact. :D

I put fx projectors in my r34 housings. They're a little bit larger than the tsx. I love the lights now. I just dremeled the projectors down to size and mounted them. There's two ways you can mount them.

1) The way w/ 4 bolts coming off the back of the projector where it hangs on the back of the housing.

2) Or you can make some mounting brackets. The link below has pics of this method.

Here's a good link on mounting.

If you want good high beams, just get some TL bixenons, and make sure they're the DOT style with a vertical flare instead of the "slant" style with the slanted flare. They are much sharper, wider and brighter. TLs have the best high beam out of pretty much any bixenon projector.

Man this guy was helpful! Thanks so much newbie!

Be prepared to spend many hours doing your retro, I put Tl's in the R34 housing and its a lot of dremeling involved and the solenoid will stick out of the housing. You will have to come up with a way to seal it so no water gets inside. I made a small box out of plexi glass to house and seal the solenoid. Let me know if you want pics so you know what your in for. And as stated earlier, check out HiDPlanet.com. all you know to need for retroing will be found there.

You found Tl projectors for only $170 ? Well you still need the ballast, ignitor and bulbs so it gets expensive.

well no sh*t, go spend another 150 in the GD section for a 50W kit, buy a wiring harness for $50 or make one if u have the patiences and ur done, thats how i got my retro together, in total any retro is going to be over $300, i was just saying for what TL projectors are(some of the best on the market) they really arent all that expensive

No need for the smart remark. I was just filling you in as well as others that more items where needed for the retro than just projectors. Seeing that you already know that then good for you. IMO I think it is a lot for projectors that require lots of work to make them fit, but its all about what you want and your budget. I have done mine and Im more than happy with the results. I dont regret it one bit. Way better than those garbage hid kits that are out there. Tl/Zkw combo.

maximase86 07-03-2008 09:45 AM

I really want the ZKW lenses, but just don't have the funds. I've also thought about doing the color mod...but probably won't. I would just be happy to have projectors.

In my personal opinion, the ZKW lenses aren't worth the price and the hype. After careful evaluation from all the pics from hidplanet and other forums, I couldn't justify spending $200-300 for the ZKW lenses when the replica ebay version from the retrofitsource is just as good...maybe even better, and at 1/3 of the cost. Also, the ZKW lenses aren't a direct swap; you have to use spacers to get that clean and sharp cutoff. I have the replica version on my TLs and it was a simple drop in with no spacers needed. I'm very happy with them and wouldn't hesitate to buy another set for my next retrofit. Now I'm not promoting the ZKW replicas lenses, but it's an excellent alternative to the real lenses. :D
