Crankshaft Position Sensor code?

So a few weeks ago, I was on a long drive when my alternator/ac drive belt snapped. I was able to purchase a new battery and make it home on that. My belt has been fixed since.

Now when I try to start my car it cranks for awhile before firing up. Also, if I give it gas while driving, and it kicks down a gear, at about 3500 rpm and up it kinda cuts out, and jerks you around a little bit.

I pulled codes and got an 0407 code, crankshaft position sensor. Can I just replace this sensor myself? Or is something else wrong, like a short in the starting circuit? I can drive the car fine now, is it ok to drive it with this problem?

Likely the sensor or wiring harness was damaged either when the belt snapped, or when it was replaced.

Test the sensor, test the circuit, replace/repair as you deem appropriate.

Should be fine to drive.

alright, thanks. I looked under where the sensor is near the oil pan, and sure enough, one of the wires leading to it was slightly severed. I repaired it, and taped it up well, and now the cars runs perfectly smooth. I love maxima's.

Thanks

Glad to hear you got it fixed. (good post Pmohr) Also, with our cars, we have a CKP (crankshaft possition sensor) and a Ref CKP - Refferance for the CKP. It's not hard to understand when the belt snapped, it musta taken out one or the other.

Glad it is fixed.

ya, it took out the wires that go to the ref CPS, whatever that means. it was the one that is located by the oil pan. Im glad it was cheap and easy, im broke as fcuk right now

Not an uncommon thing to happen. Glad you are ok and it's fixed. The CKP Ref just helps tell the ECU what position the crank is in for start up. (I'm pretty sure anyway. lol)

same thing is happening to me

My belt snapped too but i can't find this famed crankshaft positioning sensor to try and inspect it. I had a mechanic tell me that may even be the problem with cyl misfires i been experiencing
