98 Maxima high RPMs

I have a 98 Maxima GXE, automatic with 240,000 kms and am experiencing
highs revs.

At 100km or 60 MPH it reves between 3000 to 3500.

Interesting thing is I turn off O/D and there is no increase in revs. I even dropped to 2 gear and it stills revs the same?

Any diagnostic?

Does it start from a stop easily? Sounds like it's not shifting out of second.

(Do Maximas have a limp mode?)

Def. sounds like it's not shifting out of second.

Have you tried manually going 1st - 2nd - drive?

Yes, It seems so. I havn't tried shifting first to second, so does this sound like an expensive tranny job?

Limp mode: will try disconnecting battery for 5 min to reset computer.

If anything, it isn't shifting into O/D. Possibly the torque converter? And to the posts above, the Maxima isn't shifting out of 3rd. If it wasn't shifting out of 2nd at 60 mph, the RPM's would be closer to 6k.

Not 6k, 2nd tops out at ~80 so it'd probably be closer to 5 grand, or a little lower.

In any case, the first thing to do is see if the ECM or TCM are setting any codes. That should've been the first diagnostic the OP did on his own anyway...

i believe limp mode is 3rd gear only but not 100% sure on that. it sounds like you are in 3rd gear based on your speed and the revs.

Does it shift or no shifting at all?

After parking it at work and going home, all seems to operate as normal.

This morning, the cold start did not go very well, I thought the engine would stall, but maybe should have warmed up a bit. It was also very rainy and humid.

That said, maybe this is the start of tranny going down? I have noticed not too smooth shifting in higher gear when I accelerate recently.

Will try the manual code as well.

Wow, 5-6K for tranny. I thought they say these cars can last forever?

The auto trans in the A32 sucks. Then again, the 5MT is glass...you kinda lose either way. I've been through 4 autos so far...

You can get a brand new RE4F04V from Nissan for ~3k or so, they're not too expensive. Rebuilds can be about half that.

I get 0505 code so this says OK.

But usually when the diagnostic code displays, its usually too late.

Damn, I didn't know AT on Maximas don't last.

They're just like everything else. With proper care and upkeep, and appropriate driving they can last forever. Again, like most things, they tend to fall a bit short of design expectations.

Did you check the TCM diagnostics as well, or just for the ECU?

I checked using that diagnostic at the accelerator pedal.

That diagnostic is ECU? I don't have a hand held diagnostic. Is that TCM?

You did the ECU test with the screwdriver. The TCM diagnostic is a bit more involved, but much like the ECU doesn't need a scantool to complete.

It's in the same FAQ as checking the ECU codes - http://forums.maxima.org/1001794-post2.html

it is possible that your overdrive is not engaging at all, even though the light may work when you turn it on or off, do you notice higher rpms all the time or just at 60 mph?

Tried the TCM as your note and Haines manual, but no flashing light.

So it doesn't indicate a problem, but that diagnostic is really top level.

O/D works fine now, does rev when activated.

But this incident could be the start of tranny problems.

LOL wow, that's just your bad *** luck. Who goes through that many Trannys on one car, LOL. I have a manual trans and it's still running strong, almost 200,000 miles. My previous auto trans on my other maximas never went bad, and they had high mileage too.

That's why I'm just finishing up a 5MT swap, the 4AT is a PITA.

KRRZ350 was just telling me the other day one of his customers (or customer's friends, I forget) has done the same thing, 4 autos. Merlyn's on his 3rd 6MT...everyone around me just has trans problems.

My car has ate 1 auto, 1 5mt, and 1 5mt vlsd tranny. I only have 103k on my car. Then again, I have a few other things too.

To the OP is there any signs of slipping with the trans when shifting? How does your fluid look, still pink/red? Maybe you should find a TCM from a junkyard and when you have signs of trouble swap it out. Could possibly be the TCM failing sporatically...or it can point to the tranny itself.

Tranny fliud is still pink/red. No problem shifting, only thing I noticed was some hesitation when I gave some gas, but probably a different matter.

Hesitation could be an engine issue rather than transmission.

Just an unlikely thought if the 98 auto shifter is like the 97: Does your OD OFF light toggle on and off when you toggle the OD switch on your shifter? I imagine this switch could go bad.
